In the pages of a children's storybook, the village of
Bayfield and its annual Lions Club parade have been
preserved for posterity forever.
Written by Mary Alice Downie and illustrated by
Mary Lynn Baker, Dragon on Parade is a delightful,
-breezy- sun mex_story .about_ three tale girls who
create a great green dragon for the Lions Club
Parader At parade time, the littlest girl is frightened
by the finished dragon and refuses to play her part.
The day is saved by two boy cousins who arrive at the
last minute.
The story is full of amusing little details about
Bayfield. "Mr. Graham liked to be comfortable. He
usually wore shorts and knee socks in the store, which
made you feel at home." And village characters can
be spotted in the illustrator's crowd drawings.
Mary Alice Downie is a Canadian author of
children's books and she livessin Kingston with her
family. The book was first published in hardback in
1974 and the softback in 1978.
It was published by Peter Martin Associates Ltd. in
Toronto, and can be purchased for about $3.95.
ZURICH - In comparison
to surrounding
municipalities, Zurich
ratepayers should
receive a pleasant sur-
prise when .they get their
-first -tax -notice: __.- ._ _.__ .__ _ The village council
approved a mill rate
which for residential
public supporter's drops
from 171.69 to 167.38
mills, a decrease of
almost three per cent.
Separate school sup-
porters are just a little -
worse off with their mill
rate rising' 1.3 per cent to
173.16.
Y_ Clerk_ ..._.Sllar.on Baker.
said that ` the mill rate
was stablized because the
road budget had been
slashed and no 'major
street ° • renovation has
been planned for 1980.
Bruce Sully, president
of Champion Road
Machinery Limited of
Goderich, has .announced
that his . company will
sponsor the Blyth
Summer Festival
production of "Johnand
the Mis.sus" by Gordon
Pinsent.
Sheila .Richards,
president of the Festival,
said that this is a doubly
important donation on the
part o. f the' company
because it also represents
the first time a company
has agreed to sponsor a
production at the
'Festival,
The sponsorship helps
offset the high costs of,r,
production in live
theatre. .Private funding
is essential in theatre to
make up the gap between
the cost of mounting a
production L and the
moneys raised through
box office and govern-
ment grants.
"John and the lylissus"
by well-known actor and
writer Gordon Pinsent°
will open the 1980
Festival on July ' 4, The
play tells the story of
John Munn,a miner in a
Newfoundland village'
John's family and friends.
want him to moye away
from the village to a
larger community to
escape the unhealthy life
of the amine. But John
isn't sure he wants to go
and battles with his own
conscience and his self,,
respect. The show
cdmbines music, humour
and drama in a way that
will make audiences
grow to love old John,
"John and. the 1V1issus"
will have 15 per-
formances, alternating
with Ted Johns' "St. Sam
of The,,NuXe Pile" until
August 2.
