Congratulationsto
Grant and Elva Webster
who are celebrating their
25th wedding anniversary
at the Pineridge Chalet
on Saturday evening.
Charles anci Marilyn
Kalbfleisch 'hosted a
party for neighbours of
Roy and Helen Edith
Elliott and Ross and
Nancy Whittaker, who
moved recently to
Goderich and Tucker -
smith Township
'respectively. The
honoured guests were
presented with gifts of
remembrance.
About 1,700 girls from
all over Ontario and some
parts of Quebec will
attend a Jamboree at
Wildwood Conservatidn
Area near St. Marys to
celebrate the sixty-fifth
anniversary of 'Canadian
Girls in Training. It's
being held on the
weekend of June 20 to 22.
Members of Varna -
Goshen CGIT will be
accompanied by leaders
Janet WO,stv, Sharon
Chuter and Pat Taylor.
On Saturday morning
there are workshops for
creative dance, creative
worship (Rev. Wilena
Brown), crafts, etc. ,and
nature hikes. The
highlight of the program
is a visit on Sunday
morning by - the Hon..
Pauline M. McGibbon.
Lieutenant -Governor of
Ontario.
Perhaps some of our
readers could he-lp locate
CGIT middies for the
girls to wear. Also needed
is a tent large enough to
accommodate eight girls.
Next Sunday is the 55th
anniversary of church
union. There will be Holy
Communion in Varna and
Goshen.
Tonight, Thursday,
Mildred McAdam is
showing slides of Japan
at the UCW meeting in
Varna. We understand
she gives an excellent
presentation, so it will be
a worthwhile program
and it's also our last
meeting before summer
break.
Community notes •
I don't often get into
subjects like this, but I
have heard concern
expressed several times
lately for the safety of our
Varna children in traffic.
If you have children
biking to the ball park,
perhaps you would like to
impress on them the
importance of riding
single file and keeping to
the right side of the road.
Some of them have been
observed wandering all.
over the road, apparently
oblivious to vehicles
approaching from both
directions t; and making it
difficult to pass them
safely.
Another thing is the
high speed of some
drivers, especially on the
main road. A friend's
attention was drawn to
the sound of squealing
tires recently, the cause
of it being small children
who had ridden their
tricycles onto the road.
Normally these children
are n,ever on -the road, but
it's hard to watch- them
every minute. ..
Later that day a ear
was seen going through
the same area in excess
of highway speed limits.
It's unlikely it could have
stopped in time in that
situation. Slowing down
to 50 kph for'two villages
the size of Varna wouldn't
cost a driver five minutes
of his time, a small price
for the safety of our
children or to avoid the
ligihy of being evet.
partly responsible for a
bad accident.
