Him attempts to walk yeeterday and to- day proved the utter weaknerse of his limbs. He could not walk a step, though he was able to stand occasionally. The danger its that in the event of a recurrence of the oriels, with his povvers of resistance reduced to the initimum, there will be no chance for him to survive loug. The aluminum ca,nula, now ueed has been a positive relief, as during the nights since it was Arab inserted the Emperor's fits of coughingdhave decreased. On Tuesday the Emperor had five attacks of coughing, which reuired the cleansing of the canula. Yes- terday he had only three such attack. On the Continent the ontlook is rather more interesting than on this island. The pro'nesional manufacturer of war scares is lifting his head, and all kinds of rumors are afloat. Most of the fuss is made to frighten the Austro -Hungarians into giving to the Government big sums for an argument, but independently of that curiousamedley of lit- tle countriee in the Emit are full of real and genuine excitement.Macedonia, which Bulgaria camas, and W.hfeh Greece very ma turally look e upon rls her inheritance, is to all appearance on the eve of open revolt. Blood has been already shed, and the Sultan is preparing to flood the province with sold- iery, who may be relied upon to assert their master's sovereignty in a manner much more effective than considerate. The King of Servia has received another warning from St. Petersburg that his ways are becoming too Austrian to suit the Czar, and the warning bas been emphasized by an incursion, into Servia of thousanda of Russo -Montenegrin filibusters. Prince Fer- dinand has been trotting about northern Bulgaria playing . monarch with a small amotnat oteiccess, and increasing, of course, the pedesian bear's pent up wrath. The bigpbwers while watching anxiously the sick chamber at Charlottenburg, carefully watch all these doings in the Balkans, An almost unbelievable story is told of an outrage upon the body of the late German Einperor. It is said that while he was ly- iligtin state somebody stole the ivory cruel- fileeenehis hand, which, bad been put there by the Grand Duchess of Baden, his daugh- ter. An "Arabian Nights " Story. A Millionaire's EMU only, A story has lately been told that illus. trates .A. T. Stewart's noted economical spirit. He had given a dinner and theatre party, and instead of taking his guests to the theatre in carriages, am they had expect- ed, he hailed a stage and democratically hustled them all into it. Judge and airs. Hilton were of the party. While paying the farce Mr. Stewart dropped a piece of money and during almost the entire trip kept turning up the araw in the bottom of the stage(la search of it. Judge Hilton, who was ttine near him, took from his pocket nickle, and, passing it to the millionaire, to/id :—"For heaven's sake, Mr. Stewart, put this in your pcoket, and don't kick up any more dust with that straw." And here is something similar about Mrs. John Jacob Astor, who died not long ago ;---One night when the candle by which the servahts light- ed their way to bed gave ortt before the allotted time, Mrs. Astor said to Judine, the old Ptak* woman who had lived with them some yeare," Sprinkle ealt around the wick, Justine, audit will light you to bed," Ife Had TO Brae° Up. As we are far behind on matters of public importance we will devote de eavenin' to letters on de Secretary's desk,' A FINE EAR. The Secretary announced the receipt ole valuable curiosity for the museum in the Shape of a walnut knot, formed eintotly like a human ear,, and about ten timenne large. It was accompanied by the following letter: 1Vliola, April 19, 1888.. Bro: Gardner, of the Lime -Kiln Club: • Thinking that you wished to make a col- leetion of curiosities for your cabinet, I send you by mail the ear through vithich Henry W. Seymour listened for bhe returns of the election from the Upper Peninsula,February 14. Trusting that it may be placed in an honored position near the "bear trap," I remain, Yoursaetc., Oris Wiarmeras. On motion of Giveadam Jones the thanks of the club were tendered Mr. Williams and the curiosity ordered taken to the museum at once. A SOFT THING. The Secretary then announced the follow- ing: BoNHAm, Texas, April 15, 1888, Brother Gardner, President Lime Kiln Club: DEare Sra—I herewith present you a rare article, a rabbit foot, which, although it looks as innocent and harmless as a dove, is more powerful in the hands of its owner than the magic lantern of Aladdin. When- ever you wish to sell an article for a good price all you have to do is to rub your rab- bit's foot on it. Whenever you vrieh to ob- tain absolute control over a man, as Way - down Bebee or Rev. Penstock, simply rub it on him. Forever after he is everlastingly yours to command at will until death takes him from this vale of tears. In fact, in all undertakings, • if you would be successful, you have only,to use your rabbit foot. So powerful is the effect of a rabbitn foot that every colored man, woman and child in the South steads in mortal terror of it. They fear the whites will use it, and by its in- strumentality put them back into slavery. Now, it is not every rabbit's foot that has this magical power. It must be a, rabbit that was born in a graveyard, and the nest in which it was born be near a grave. And it must never have left the graveyard, but lived there all its life, and it must be killed just at the hour of midnight. The one I send you was taken off a rabbit killed in Willow Wild Cemetery just as the city clock tolled, out the hour of 12, Ib has been thoroughly tested and found to work wonders. You will not have any trouble now in finding out who it was that destroyed Paradise Hall and keeping order in your club. Rub each member gently with it and you have got him eternally. • The other three feet of this rabbit have been sent North to be used in the coming Presidential campaign. One was sent to President Cleveland and the others to Chair- men of the Democratic Executive Com- mitteepf Indiana and Wieconein, and, by the way, several more will be sent to Illinois and Michigan. We think with a little •effort and a free use of the rabbit's foot all these States will go Democratic. Now Brother Gardner, in consideration of this valuable gift I shall expect you to USG the powerful influence of the Lime-Kila for Cleveland. Very truly, Minh Leal "1 shall accept de gift," said —Brother Gardner, "bub withoub condishitns. Dia club has nuffia' to do wid pollytioks, nor parties'an' all de raltbits in de kentry could'nt ohange our by-laws in dat reaped." LATER ON. The reading of the following letter creat- ed unbounded excitement: SEA BREEZE, N. I., April 17, 1888. Brother Gardner : DEAR Sin—Last fall a movement was set onfoot by some of our prominent colored citi- zens to organize a company for the purpose of building a hotel and sanitarium for the exclusive use and benefit of colored people. The difficulty experienced in obtaining ac- commodation at the seaside and elsewhere during the heated term bas compelled many of our best people to remain at home at a time when they have felt that their 'health demanded a change. This movement has taken definite shape during the winter in the organization of the "La Africane Hotel Company," which has acquired the title to a large tract of land at Sea Breeze, N. la, and are now having erected a commodious and elegant hotel. No expense will be spared and it is proposed to make this the resort tor the colored wealth and culture of the country. A music pavilion and band will be an im- portant feature of the enterprise. We are de irous of engaging the beat colored talent in the country, and wieh you to send us six of your best musicians. We offer as an in- ducement for first class men $50 per week and expenses. Our season will open June 1. A handsome uniform with solid gold buttons will be furnished by the company, We have heard the Rev. Penstock men- tioned very highly, but will leave tlie mike- timi to you, Awaiting an early reply we are Yours truly, Ln. AFRAOANE HOTEL CO" CALAMITY ADAMS, Manager. A dozen members were on their feet in an instant, and for two minutethere wars a seeneimf confusion. The beloved. brethren have cautiouely built add lodge room on the dry bottom of the creek and set it on stilts, and calked the bottom and eiders for a distance of eight feet from the water line. After a short lecture by Brother Jones on " The Failure of Lite," he proceeded to effect a permanent organization by enrolling the names of sixteen members on the Lodge Book. After which we proceed to the elec. tion of officers. Bro. Speedy Cured Evans °Jetta elected President by a unanimous vote and Bro. Cedar Top Lewis was choseirVice- Master. After a spirited contest between Bros. Joint Sebter Situderson and Bowlegs Stepheneon the former was returned as Sebrotary by a majority of two. The other offices being appointive, were speedily fill- ed, after which the Secretary was instructed to address your honor for the following in- formation: Sideaohe Newmae wirenes to know if it is allowable for Cotioura, Douglas to sleep during lodge hours. • Beams, Mc. And last, but not least, your worthy Secretary wishes to know if you spell Shavin-Hose with an S, or a Q? Yours truly, JOHN SETTER SANDERSON. . - Secretary. The Secretary was instructed to answer the several questions, officially, and the meeting then adjourned. Ernain Bey, Who is this Emin Bey about whom so many wondermnd for whose ransom Stanley has taken his life in his hand? He is the last of General Gordon's officers in the Soudan. He is an Austrian—Dr. Schnitzler by name—and was long ago ap- pointed under Gordon as Governor for the Khedive of*Egypt of the province of the big lakes, which effice he still holds, and is in good hopes of continuing to hold for years to come, in spite of all the slave -holders and traders of Central Africa. A letter from him has been recently received, dated as usual from Wadelai, on the banks of the Albert Nyanza, where he has, or had, two steamers. The letter is • a very cheer- ful one, especially considering the cir- cumstances under which it was written. The writer had been busy forming new sta- tions on the borders of the lake, and sup plying them with goods brought up by caravan from Uganda, on the larger lake of Victoria Nyanza—the district where poor Bishop Hannington was murdered. He had established order in his own neighborhood, and had got the native chiefs to act in con- junction with him. The year's crops were plentiful, and the cotton plantations were" yielding fairly. Cotton goods were made in the neighborhood for ordinary wear, and special prints for high days were sent up from Uganda by Mr. Mackay, the Church of England Missionary Society's agent there. On the whole, Brain Pasha at that time con- sidered the outlook bright, and he is so con- tent with it that, even alleuld Stanley succeed in reaching him, he will not return with that traveller, but will etick at his post. His special function would seem to be the civilization of the region round about; for of course he can no longer be regarded as the representative of Egypnwhich has long since abandoned the Soudan to its own devices. Emin Bey contemplates making a aired road through the fierce Masai country to the sea, and if Stanley's expedition of relief from the West should open up a high road to Albert Lake from the Congo, there would be a way across the Dark Continent, with Emin keeping guard at its centre. Priva- tions do not termfy the 13eye he says, and the surprising news of Gordon's death, which has reached him, only makes him think of another soldier who has gone to his rest, and of the need of carrying pn his work. Yet there is enough in the letter, too, to let us see that the writer is sensible of the difficulties around him. The tyrant of Uganda, King M'Wanga., has once more been devil staeing the Unyoro district, whose chief, Kabrega, would not listen to Dr. Ernin's warnings, and has now had to flee for his life. With such a savage within reach Emin can never afford to be off his guard. There is at present no news of the arrival at Emin's garrison of Stanley's ex- pedition, which started early last year. • Consumption Surely Cured. A V oluntary Statement, The writer of this paragraph once had an elder and only brother. Brought up to- • gether, we were almost inseparable, hopeful and ambitious, Exposure planted the seeds of consumption in the elder, and in a few weeks, in the month of May, "good store of flowers were stuck round about his wind- ing, sheet." Every attention and every remedy that love could give or obtain were unavailing. Since that sad day, I have learned, through the most trustworthy au- thority and fronenxperience in Re use, that a real remedy now" exists, that of Dr. Pierce, called the "Golden Medical Discovery." A thousand pities that it was not discovered ages ago but how thankful the present gen- eration ago, be that it con now avail itself of so potent a remedy. The average American young man thinks if he were in the place of Alexander of Bat tenberg he would leave Bismarck and the rest of them wrangling and elope with the girl. Symptoms Of Catarrh. A profuse and many times excessiyely of- fensive discharge, with " stopping up" of the nose at times, impairment of the eense of ernell and taste, watering or weak eyes, impeiren hearing, irregular appetite, occa- sional nausea, pressure and pain over the eyes, and at tirnos in the back of the head, occasional chnly eensaticns, cold feet, and a feeling of laseitude and debility, are van toms which are common to catarrh, yet all of them are not •present in every case. Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy cures catarrh in its worst forms and stages. It is pleasant to user and contains no poisonous or caustic drugs. Of druggists, for 50 cents.
