Liberal , agriculture
critic Jack Riddell
chastised Agriculture
Minister Lorne Hen-
derson on MondaY for his
frequent absences from
the legislature.'
He also demanded .the
provincial government
preg fot an increase in
Ontario - dairy farmers'
production quota and
suggested establishment
of 'a fund from which
over -production* fines
could be paid.
Riddell said during the
question period he and
colleagues have been
deprived of asking
Henderson important
questions recently
becaUse the minister has
been away SO Much. On
Friday, said Riddell, he
found Henderson in the
governmeilt lobby behind
the legislatire chamber
rather than in .the house
where he could be
questioned.
Riddell then asked his
milk quota question of
Premier William Davis
who 'promised to get the
infer niat ion.

Henderson has said

This command was commonly given in battle
many years ago. Some of the older guns had poor
accuracy and if a soldier didn't fire his weapon
until he could see "the whites of the eyes" of his
enemy, he increased the chances of killing him
The soldier firing, also got a good closeup of a
dramatic end to his foe.
Just like the old saying, there are some old
ideas about spraying spring grain. One of these
notions is to delay spraying until the weeds are
high. This way you can have a very dramatic
kill. This is referred to as "revenge spraying"
since the weeds have already done most of the
damage. It is the early weeds that do the most
damage. You have to get rid of them early to
reduce this early competition. As well, the grain
is more tolerant when it is small and the weeds
are easiest to kill when they are small. Your
grain should be sprayed when it has five to six
leaves (about four inches high).
Wild oats can only be controlled in pure barley.
There is still no chemical that will control wild
oats and not harm tame oats. Wild oats are
controlled by spraying with Carbyne when the
wild oats have two leaves. This product controls
wild oats but no other weeds. You can control
wild oats plus the main broadleaved weeds by
using a tank mix of Avenge plus MCPA ester.. Of
course, Avenge by itself, controls wild oats. If
annual grasses and wild oats areiyour problerri,
then Hoegrass will control thist combination.
Another new product is Stampede CM. It con-
trols foxtail plus the common annual weeds.
• Plough down red clover can be sprayed with
MCPA. This recommended rate is four to eight of
acid, depending on the formulation, On a number
of labels it appears that the sodium salt 48 is
safer than the Amine 80. At least this is assumed
since some labels recommend up to one pint of
MCRA sodium salt 48 (six ounce active acid).
The same company's label only recommends
two-fifths of a 'Sint of MCPA Amine 80 (four
ounces active acid). Again the critical point is to
spray early when the weeds are easy to kill.

DENNIS MARTIN,
• Although the precise cause of milk fever
remains unknown, much has been learned in
recent years abOut the disease and methods of
prevention. Milk fever occurs generally in early
lactation, when a cow cannot mobilize calcium
from the bone or absorb it as fast as it is being
secreted in the milk. Blood calcium level 'drops
and the cow will die if calcium is not given to her
..bY the bloodatream.. _ .
During the dryperiod, the cow stores calcium
in her bones. At calving, the bone must release
• this calcium for milk production. Some cows are
• unable to release this calcium and consequently
"milk fever" develops:.
Iowa State University suggests feeding a low
calcium diet 14 days previous to calving. The low
calcium diet apparently causes the release of
bone calcium into the blood stream, thus
enabling the cow to be ready for the demands on
blood calcium that occurs with calving. This
research points out once again the importance of
separating the dry cow from the milking cow and
feeding a -ration to meet her special needs.
For those cows with a history of milk fever, an
injection of one million LU. of Vitamin D3 per 100
pounds of body weight should be given in the
rump two to four days before calving. If eight
days- after injection the cow has not calved,
• provide a second dosage of Vitamin D3.
