Clinton News-Record, 1980-05-08, Page 28' E CLINT N NEWS -RE IR 1RS1~iA ", M'A'CS ,1080 BY S'AC R1»» LL 1.LP,," doth Opposition Finance Critics have given . their Parties' formal response to the Provincial Budget 'aught down ,on April 32.- In 2.-fn his, reply, David Peterson (Lib, London. Centre) tabled a non- . confidence motion saying the government's "failure to implement an economic strategy has contributed significantly to the economic decline of Ontario." fie accused. the Treasurer of presenting a "band-aid" budget which does not address the serious economic problems facing the province. Referring to measures to aid pen- sioners,, which he described as "goodies", he pointed out that /these will result in less money, compared to property tax credits on income tax returns, for some 135,000 senior citizens. Some people will get $100 a year less, while some wealthier pen- sioners will get up to $450 a year snore. In addition, he said the budget ignores the 340,000 unemployed people in this province, doesn't provide enough for research and develop- ment and fails to stimulate energy con- servation measures. "Thee Treasurer, is no Robin Hood," he said. "His program befits the Sheriff of Nottingham much beater." The NDP Finance - —, _ itY'C ...- also -'-ha-d— scafit praise and much criticism for the budget. He also criticised the government for lack of ari industrial sirategy, -and condemned its "laissez faire attitude" toward the economy forcausing great economic and social suffering. He called layoffs in the auto i'ndustry "the ' most critical situation facing any sector". Auto Industry Chrysler of Canada and the federal and provincial government continue to try to negotiate details of a $200 million -aid program for the finan- cially troubled auto company following its parent company's an- nouncement that -it plans to buy rather than build its new V6 engine. This news is a devastating blow for the town of Windsor, where Chrysler Canada planned to produee the engine. Both federal and provincial governments insist that Chrysler must guarantee at least 14,500 Canadian jobs if .the company, expects to receive gov.er.nment money. The' whole idea of the proposed financial 'aid is to save Canadian jobs, not the auto company. Hamilton's Magic Box It seems clear that literally hundreds of thousands of gallons of liquid -industrial waste at a Hamilton dump 1 aked through a large split in a holding tank in 1978 and was only discovered after six months by a police investigation. Charges have not been pressed against the company managing the site by the Ministry of the Environment because a certificate of approval didn't expressly disallow the dumping of liquid waste, according to a ministry spokesman. Liberal Leader Stuart Smith has charged that the holding tank became known as "the magic box" among workers at the dump and haulers who trucked in waste. "It was magic in that no matter how much waste a hauler put in it, the waste seemed to disappear," he said. "What was really hap- pening was the bottom of the tank had been eaten away and the waste poured into it was simply disappearing below." Dr. Smith renewed a call for a judicial inquiry into the duxnp's operation, a demand he first made a year ago after the Ministry of the Environment admitted it couldn't account for about 500,000 gallons of waste that. had entered the plaint gates. FOreign Land land was an overblown Ownership concern. Recently the overn- Rowever, it has now meet 'released a study introduced a bill which Which said foreign would, require till non- ownershiP agricultural a rcultural residentstoregister their financial interests in farmland. ,The Minister said the province should, know the extent of foreign ownership in two years. If it is excess.\ consideration wouldbe given to legislation which would require Cabinet approval for land Pur- chases byforei nets. "Act, This Act; to Require osition r the Registration of Non. resident, lntergst in Agricultural ` Lan. in Ontario is almost identical to the private Member's Bill on the subject which 1 trice introduced. Labour `Task s Force Province -wide hearings of the Liberal Task 'Force continued thisweek as task force chairman, Ron Van Horne, (Lib. London North) met with labour and management representatives in n Toronto.,.Previously Meetings,'have been held in London, Kitchener, Hamilton and Windsor. Turn WE, RESERVE THE RIGHT TO.
