Shade Trees.
he most, advanced idea of planting
shade trees is to set the row alternately
with soft maple and elm. The soft maple
is a rapid grower, but does not grow high
and temt long lived. The elm grows ••
more slowly, but attains much greater
size and height, and wittiest for centuries -
While the row is young the elm will make
little show, but the maples will giVO suf-
ficient shade. When the foliage. becomes
too dense the maples can be cut out and
the,elms will fill the spaee.
A Hard Case
One of our grocers, the other day, found
to his sorrow that be was giving more
granulated sugar for the $ than he adver-
tised (he never forgot to weigh the paper
same time as the sugar) and he did not
perceive his mistake until the other day,
when he found, out thet his scale was so
adjueted that by Placing the goods on one
part of the scale it weighed. in his favor,
and by placing the goods two inches furth-
er over the scales weighed in favor of the
customer. Theyewere in the latter posit-
ion when he was selling sugar at cost.
We notice now that he has one of Wu, -
sores "Perfection" Scales, purchased from
WHAcee & Sox, 100 Esplanade street,

An Vggasperating Problem.
Toronto and Montreal, together with
several American cities, judgieg by their
daily papers, have been wrestling for days
with what; is knewn as "the hen's egg
problem," which almost beats the old
"1415" puzzle. It runs thus : If a hen
and a half lay an egg and a half in a day
undo, half, how many eggs will six hens
lay in seven. days? Now don't be too
hasty with your answer. Perhaps you
know how to work it out, but look here :

To the Editor of the Exeter Times •
DEAlt Sin. --I was very much astonished
lest week on finding that a purely politi-
cal meeting had been held in James street
Methodist Church. A meeting to nomi-
nate a man as License Inspector for South
Huron was called.by someone for one day
last week. Candidates for that office and
politiciana of Reform tendenciea came to
town to attend the meeting. Theyfirst
tried to get admittance to the Main, staeet
Church, failing which they succeeded in
getting into the James -et. church. If it
was wrong to hold a political meeting on
Main -St. how could it be right to hold
it on James -et. ? And who is responsible?
Is. it the Trustees or the Pastor, Or bnth ?
Everyone knows that the offiee of 11 -
cense Rise:teeter is a political office, g'ven
for party services to none but a enpporter
of the present Administration. 'Seems of

gets into a box andasks a convention to
decide. That was all right, ami nobody's
business. But why in the name of all
that is sacred, hold the •eoterentnen in A
church? It is useless to claim thatit was,
a temperance convention; bectiese the ofe
fice is a political one, and Mr/Bishop, M.
P. P., was the Central figure of the meet-
ing, and everyone knows he is neither a
Methodist nor a temperance men, that is,
a total abstainer. Nene but mentbets of
one political party were present One un-
fortunate Conservatiye temperance man
who attended a short session in the morn-
ing was given to understand that he ccm1c1

• Now, Sir, where is this kind of thing.
likely to end ? What may not be done in
our churches in future if this is tolerated?
To my mind and to the minds of others
this is a very serious ine, tter ,end wants
thorough elucidation. And we want to
know who' is reeponsible..
