Respected citizen
dead at 68
Mr, George Carl
Lerchis, a well-known
resident in the Vanastra
community, died early
Saturday morning at the
age WA.
Mr. Lerchis was born
on May i5, 1911 In the
country of Latvia. He is
survived by his wife
Zelma. ,
The couple were
married in 1935 and
because.of war conditions
and the Communist take-
over of their homeland,
the couple emigrated to
Canada, first George in
1949 with his wife
followinga while later.
Upon retirement from
General Electric at
Guelph, the couple moved
into the Vanastra com-
munity in 1976, making
-their-home-at-82-'toorta
Blvd. George was well-
known and liked by adults
and children in the
community for his free
advice and open -
heartedness. The com-
munity will miss him.
The funeral service
was held at the Beattie
Funeral home with. Rev.
Peter Mantel of the

went on at a meeting.
Next week the All
Around girls will be doing
their compass work and
are reminded to bring
their compass to the next
meetingth.

daughter banquet this

presentation will be
made, This is the highest
award any girl guide can
achieve: along with this
five of our Guides will be
receiving the All Around

Approximately 13 girls
are of Pathfinder age this
year and the group is still
looking for two leaders.
Unfortunately these girls
will not be allowed to stay
in Guides -s much as
these girls are very in-
terested in Guiding
unless two leaders for
Pathfinders can be found

in Kitchener to kick off
the theme for Education
Week, Together In
Education. Although
most of the travellers
were pupils from the
school, the group also,,
i..rt. c l_u -d e d_.. . p-a.r-.ents-;
younger brothers and
sisters and one grand-
father. A great time was
had by all!
This week, May 4 to
May 10 has been
Education Week in
Ontario and many special
events have taken place.
May 4 was Arbor Day and
students planted about
four dozen trees near the
school. to help beautify
the grounds. Thanks goes
to Mrs. Dorothy Williams
for donating the trees.
As you know, . for the
past two years the school
has been running a daily
exercise program. When
the weather warms up
the program is
adequately supplemented
by the increased outside
activity of youngsters. It
has been decided to use
the time slot, normally
reserved for rhythmics,
for reading. As with
rhyphmics, everyone in
the school will be ex
peeted to read for the
entire period of time and
this U.S.S.R. (Unin-
terrupted Sustained
Silent Reading) program
starts this week.
There was Open House
on May 7 and parents
were invited t� come up
to the school anytime
during the day to watch
their child. in 'action. The
school tried to operate a
normal school day.
Plans are underway for
theschool picnic and sing
song to be held outside
'when the weather warms
up in June. The exact
date and location has not
yet been finalized.
On May 9 clean-up day
is planned from 2:30-3: 30
p.m. There are lots of
housekeeping duties that
