LLL studies nutrition
La Leche League,
Belgrave held the fourth
meeting, "Nutrition and
Weaning", with a large
number of mothers at-
tending from as far away
as Goderich and Ripley.
The hostess of this series,
Mrs. Terri Korstanje,
was presented. with a
book, "Nursing Your
Baby". by Karen Pryor,
as thanks for having
opened her home to in-
terested mothers.
The leader, Mrs.
Barbara Kerr, opened the
meeting with a history of
the La Leche League and
its' work in helping
mothers to breastfeed.
The mothers then irr
troduced themselves and
their little ones and told
how they had learned
about the League. Most
mothers had heard about
the LLL- through pre-
natal classes and other
mothers.
Discussion was opened
to consider the nutritional
make-up of colostrum
and breastmilk, which is
the superior infant food
for baby until the middle
of the first year. The
mothers exchanged ideas
on which foods were most
nutritious when begin-
ning solids, and how to go
about introducing other
foods. Questions about
'weaning were asked and
it was recommended that
the process be gradual,
with lots of love.
Family nutrition was
touched upon, followed by
a tasting time of three
kinds of porridge, with
lots of different toppings
(no sugar) such as
granola, raisins, seeds
and fruit.. Many carne
back for seconds.
The mothers were
invited to attend the next
series which will be held
at Mrs. Myra Stuart's
home in Wingham on
May 20 at 8 p.m. Gran-
dmothers are especially
invited to attend this
meeting.
