Nowadays, pro- duce costs are sky high except during seasonal surpluses. Hence, more home gardeners are demanding maximum value from the vegetables they grow. Some kinds of vegetables are more "space efficient" than others. They return a higher monetary value ler the space they occupy, plus the usual good nutrition and recrea tion. Tiessen Department of Horticultural Setence University of Guelph • Before you start to plant your garden, take the time to consider the size of garden, family preference, and the garden ovation. With good planning, the yield of the average family garden can be doubled. First, select a place for the garden. Choose the area with the most sunlight, good drainage and good'soil. If the garden is small, soil con- ditions can be improved by adding topsoil, peat, manure or compost. You can obtain „higher yields from crops grown in small areas with better. envirpnmental conditions than from larger, shaded, and poorly -drained areas. A minimum of six hours of sunlight each day is necessary. If the only sunny areas around your home are patios or open driveways, plants can be grown in boxes of 30•to 45 centimetres (14 to 18 inches) of topsoil. 9a.l I 8.') 7'1 7.1 7.2 1).4 41.9 I1.ti li..j ti.:) l4 5. ri. 1 Ve 3/21 fleets 3/23 Turnips ., 8/23 White onion sets . 5/23, Carrots 3!/23 Ratishes- red 3/23.
