31. Card of thanks
WILDFONG
From the deepest spot in our
heart comes the word "thank
you" to our family, relatives
and many, many friend
during and.since our sad anilff
sudden bereavement of our

Forrest. Special "thanks" to
the doctors and nurses at

numbers of the series,
given that both numbers
are less than 10 in value.
Can you find the

Last week -was our
special Easter puzzle.
Rabbits started their
daily doubling, until a
field was full on the 30th
day. Since the number of
rabbits doubles each day,
the field -will -be -half -full
on
ield-wiil-be-half-fullon the 29th day.
On the 30th day, there
will be 1,073,747,824
rabbits. This could take
over _ 200 square
kilometres of, space, if
five rabbits can fit in a
square metre of space.
Since rabbits cannot
multiply on.a daily basis,
and since it was written
for April Fool's,.' this is
basically conjecture.
by Jolie Armstrong
If you're .like me, your
favourite motto
probably, "Why do today,.
what you can put off until
tomorrow." If you pile uP
things to do on a
tomorrow that never
comes, thenyou too
belong to the group of
people - known as
procrastinators.
Sometimes, getting a
certain project done is a
chore simply because one
Cannot find the time to
tackle it until other
projects, , which take
priority, are, out of the
way. More often than not,
however, it isn't time that
is lacking but rather
motivation, especially -at -

students are beginning to
count the days until
summer.
Why is it that starting a
task is such a task in
itself?' It only makes
sense to get things done
which we dislike doing so
that we can go ahead and
enjoy ourselves, free of
worry. According to
psychologist Dr. Jane
Burka, "procrastinators
are avoiding putting
themselves to an ultimate
test." Some feel they
cannot cope adequately
with a given assignment
and therefore, put it off,
waiting for a. "brain-
storm".
Others worry about
perfection, bothered
because they maybe
don't, as of yet, have the
"r..ight..angle'.' froniwhich
to approach the topic.
The suggestion is that in
order to help overcome
procrastination, students
.should try to be less
grade -oriented and less
worried about perfection.
Besides, it is highly
Unlikely that you will
have a "brainstorm" or
find the "right angle" if
you approach an
assignment at the last

you will "crackup►' as
your deadline creeps up
on you. True, some
, people . have trained
themselves to work well
and r pressure. (yours
triuly), but sooner or later
that approach is bound to
fail, °
One of the best reason.
for abstaining from:
procrastination is that
without : fall, something,.
unforeseen. comes up just
as you prepare to attack
your . assignment at the
last minute. Your family
suddenly decides to go
away for the weekend but
.you can't because you
have to write a history
essay which is due
Monday; or you leave an
assignment on your • es
to gather dust until the
night before the day it is
due, and surprisingly you
are given homework in
every class to be done for
the next day as well.
Do these situations
sound familiar? Do you
often catch yourself
saying, "I'm never going
to put things off again"?
Have you ever banged
your head against a'brick
wall at midnight after
realizing that you don't
have the right books after
all for your topic? Did
you ever put off an
assignment figuring that
you could do it quickly at
lunch before class only to
discover that it is not Day
I as you. suspected but
rather Day II?
If you have any of these
"or otlier§yiriptomsof
procrastination, then you
definitely need help.
Don't - give up!
Pr`ocr'astination can be.
beaten.
O vaercom.idg. procrastination is is snnply
a matter of organization.
To develop better habits,:
break your work ."down
Into. smaller pieces in -t«
stead of treating, each
project • as a one-shot
task. Do the work step-
by.,step. For example, if
you are writing an esspy,
pick your topic _one day,.
do the research the next,
write the' introduction
another, etc, Smaller
tasks don't seem so en-
dless, anti thus you won't
mind doing themN• as
much.
It's working for me.
Monitor your time using a
s hedule and stick to it,
Like a diet, it can only
work if you have the
willpower to follow it.
When you are finished
one session, take a break
or treat yourself to
something you like doing.
It just might work!
Commit yourself.
Pledge never to
procrastinate again. Join
the group of people you
admire — those who
tackle projects im-
mediately and get them

A first -grade pupil

inevitable question:
"What did you learn in
school today?" "I

that's wrong;" said his
mother. "Well," said the
youngster, "in that case -I
didn't learn anything."
