Perhaps in Canada we
do not have the problem
of cattle having a nap on
the roads - however, this
is not. an uncommon
occurrence in Scotland.
So, in part, the article
reads:
"Reflective cows? -
That's the idea of one
Scottish 'farmer who
wanted to prevent
motorists from colliding
with his cattle. During
the winter months the
cattle like to lie on the
unfenced tarmac roads,
which they find warmer
and dryer than the damp
highland grass.
To create the new look,
cattle breeder John
MacDonald marked 'his
herd with Scotchlite
Reflective Liquid.
About as easy to see as
a ghost in fog, is how he
describes the driver's
task of seeing a black
Aberdeen. Angus lying on
a black tarmac road on a
dark night.
Road safety was
another reason for Mr.
MacDonald's "Light -a -
cow" plan since as a
county councillor and
chairman of a local high-
ways committee, he has a
special interest in
reducing accidents.
The cow's equivalent of
the armband is a saucer -
sized area of "Scotchlite"
Reflective Liquid on each
shoulder and on either
side of the hind part of the
body. Froni a pilot test,
Mr. MacDonald has
found that the position of
these four markings
gives motorists the best
chance of seeing the
reflective areas in time to
stop."

BEAVERS SCOUTS
NEWS...by Mary Freeman
by Mary Freeman •
Beavers: Different kinds of "windmills" were
shown to the Beavers by Jim Boughen in the form of
well -drawn sketches. Jim gave a short informative
talk before breaking the boys into lodges to handcraft
their own windmills from egg cartons.
"Sharing, sharing, sharing" that's our motto and
the colony has scheduled a "sharing and showing"
time with friends. This week Chris Hoggarth brought
his stuffed tiger and Matthew Butcher his collection of
stones.
CURS
The colony has again been saddened with the
departure of leader John Hoy.. John has found em-
ployment and the Beaver colony wishes him. good luck
in his new job.
Volunteer parents, Jim Boughen and Rose Edwards
will be. helping with' the leadership team and will
become invested in the -fall: -
Cubs: Thursday night was a night for "Rally Car
Races". The Cubs raced their featherweight cars, 1
personally constructed, along wooden race tracks. A
winner will be announced next week. •
The following Cubs received badges: Greg Dinning,
house orderly and petkeepers; Daryl Heniingway,
team players; Jeff Roy, woodsmen and swimmers;
Michael Taitreceived his tawny star badge.
Scouts': Scouts continued to viork on compass
bearings and topographical maps. This is a major part
'of the Exploring Badge.
Also final tests for the Religion and Life Emblem
were passed by those boys still working towards this
award. Arrangements for the presentation will have to
be finalized. with Reverend Oestreicher who conducted
the program. Our thanks to him for his time and effort
over the past Several weeks.
The Scouts were asked to inform their parents of the
upcoming Canadian Jamboree Information Night on
April 14 at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be a Scout-
master who has taken his troop to the Canadian
Jamboree in 1977, Nordjamb Internal Camporee in
1978 and the Manitoba Jamboree in 1979. He will be
speaking on the logistics of such an undertaking -
preparation and fund raising.
Next week there will be no Scout meeting due to the
Easter Monday holiday.
Make Hand Shadows
Written by Kathryn MacKay
Illustrated by Lesley Fairfield
To make hand shadows all you need is a hand. a light. and a blank
wall. The closer you put your hand to the light the Nigger the
shadow will be. If your shadow is furry around the edges. mope
your hand a little bit closer to the wall. Experiment until you can
make a shadow that looks like something you want it to. Below are
some ideas for making shadows on walls — see is you can do
them. A little twist of your wrist can make a perfectly tame creature
into a monster. If you get scared put your hand in your pocket.
