Alec and Mary 060o
and TM Rathwell-were
hosts to a large group of
Canadian Jersey Cattle
Club members -on.
Monday morning. They
were from such widely
separated places as
Langley, B,C and Nora
Scotia; They. held their
annual meeting • in
London . duringthe
weekend, and were
having a look at herds.
and herd management in
this area.
Grant Butcher . from
Central Ontario has been
president for the past
year. Because Eric
41).
Longeway of Calgary
assumes the presidency,
next year's meeting will.
be held in Alberta.
Alec and Mar 's,.,herd ,,
of Elmline Jerseys was
founded . by his uncle,
Tom Rathwell in 1938,
and in 1940 -he bought his
first registered Jersey.
The Rathwell s used to
deliver milk by horse to
-the Holmesville cheese
factory, but it is now
picked up by Bob 'Elliott
and sold through the Milk
Marketing Board.
In 1958, they installed a
bulk tank, one of the first
in the area, and the herd
went on R.O.F. testing in
1957. In 1967, Alec took
over from his uncle, who
still takes an active part
in.the farm work and over
the years they have
continued .to improve the
herd, which has in-
creased to 35 cows. Their
present BCA (Breed
Class Average) is in the
104's, 100 - being . t17e.
normal average.
Alec and Mary
received a certificate of
recognition from the
Constructive Breeders
Registry on the weekend.
This is an achievement of-
note,
fnote, as " there are only
about a. dozen Jersey
breeders in Canada who
have qualified °for this
certificate.
Alec's stepson, Jim
Sparling, who is still in
school, has acquired a
few Jerseys as a foun-
dation for a herd. The
sweet scent of hay was
noticeable in the burn,
which 's'ays a lot about
how clean the .Ostroms
keep their dairy barn and
the high quality of the hay
they feed.
Ball registration
Ball registration for the
children and youth of
Stanley Township was
held last Saturday at the
hall in Varna. Unfor-
tunately,- most- -people-
forgot about it, so Sharon
and Marjorie phoned
those who played last
year and anyone they
thought might be in-
terested in getting on a
team. If you have
children who would like
to play, and have not been
contacted, please call
Sharon Chuter at 482-7149
or Marjorie Hayter at
262-5857.
An ambitious and in-
teresting program is
being prepared for the
UCW Thankoffering
meeting next " Thursday
4110 evening, April 3, when a
Jewish Seder or Passover
supper will be enacted.
Several neighbouring
groups have been invited
to this meeting.
Joan McAsh was in
Ottawa for three days a
week ago to attend her
step -grandfather's
funeral. Our sympathy to
Joan inter loss.
Two busloads of people
from Clinton,' Brucefield
and Varna attended the
Old .Tyme 'Jamboree in
London Gardens on
Sunday:
Barry and Pat Taylor,
Jim and Kate Keys and
Ron and Joyce Taylor
returned a week ago
Monday from a trip. to
Nashville.
