to the Poconos and the
fond memories they held
of the area.
In 1945, the first strictly
honeymoon resort opened
in the Poconos, bearing
no resemblance to the
glamorous and spec-
tacular industry it
launched. Couples
honeymooned in log
cabins, took turns waiting
on tables in the dining
_hall and kept house for
themselves.
Couples had to send in
pictures before being
accepted and Roman
Catholics were usually
not •accepted since the
management didn't want
the extra burden of
taking them to church on
Sundays.
Though honeymoon
resorts have risen' and
fallen in popularity with
newlyweds over the past
three and a half decades,
the charm and allure of
the Poconos has con-
sistently claimed a major
share of the national
honeymoon market every
year.
It was actually not until
the early 1960s when the
Poconos came into their
own as a honeymoon
destination. In 1960, Life
Magazine ran photos and
a story on the now well-
publicized heart -shaped
bathtub, whose inventor
owned a Pocono
_y.honeymoon resort that
helped convert sex into a
marketable commodity
for honeymooners.
Around that time, one
of the United State's
leading bridal magazines
- dubbed the Poconos as
the "Honeymoon Capital
of the World," and
couples began flocking to

One of. the reasons for
the popularity of the
Pocono honeymoon
seems to lie in the fact
that even though
honeymooners like to be
alone, they like the idea
of being with their con-
temporaries (other
honeymooners) with
whom they feel,. at ease,
when and if they so
choose. Realizing this
