is little more than a
c -harming, cliche.
Sometime after the
honeymoon, (and
hopefully long before, the
first anniversary!) 'fiscal,
reality sets in. .Most
married couples begin
with a vague plan for
paying the rent, utilities
and the like. Unfor-
tunately, just as many
don rt have a plan for
much more than that.
Unexpected auto repairs
or forgotten annual in-
surance premiums can
make their appearance
and throw an otherwise
orderly budget into a new
state of Cantp1ete-
disarray! Or, Christmas
arrives without the
money for gifts. Your
vacation is finally at hand
but you have no funds to
tinanoe it. You'd . like to
buy a .ohne of your pwn
but the down payment
eludes you. •
How do you avoid these

But wait —• don't run
away from that ternT.
• Forget your timeworn
definition of a budget as ,a�.
straitjacket on your
spending habits. In fact, a
badget is any reasonable
fiscal plah you devise to
account for your money.
It should include regular
expenses (rent, food,
utilities, etc.), occasional
expenses (clothing,
hobbies, entertainment)
as well as a. fuud for -your
financial future (savings
and investments) . Setting
up a budget is really just
a matter of watching
where the money goes for

length of time, store them
in tarnish -free cloths or in
a tighfly closed silver
chest.

a few weeks. and writing
down those regular ex-
penses plus a monthly
contribution to cover
occasional expenses and
some regular amount of
savings (at least 5-10
percent of your
paycheck) .
Sometimes you can't
make the monthly in-
come stretch over all of
your obligations. Look for
reasonable areas to trim.
Perhaps you'll have to
skip a few movies, .or
forego a new wardrobe to
make ends meet. You
may have to postpone
buying a new car 'or
taking that winter
