With the big day almost
at , hand, you've been
more than busy —
dashing off to fittings,
rehearsals and parties,,
ordering invitations and :.
planning,your
honeymoon' itinear , In
the midst of all the happy
turmoil and excitement,,
you are planning on,
furnishing. your first
hdme together.
More, than just a roof
over your' head, this
shared living space. will
be a place where you will '
work and grow together.
it will also be one of the .
first major inve ments
you Will make as a
couple.
Often, newlyweds feel
pressured to buy
everything at once,
rushing into decisions
without a definite plan. •
To make furnishing your
first home a trouble-free
and happy, experience,
these guidelines are
offered.
'Spend time together
talking about the type of
furnishings you and your
groom like. Decide what -
pieces are going to be
important to you. in your -
new home.
Make excursions to
furniture stores, display
rooms and model homes
— this is an excellent way
'to become familiar with
what is available and
what various pieces will-
cost.
Analyze the -activities
which will take place in
your home . and 'make a
list, room by room, of
where they will . occur.
Will- the living room be
used mostly for quiet
-farnify living? -Will it..
double as a work space or
be reserved for more
formal entertaining? Will
the bedroom be the place
where you decide to
watch television? Most
rooms will have to .be
planned and furnished to, ,
accommodate several'
activities.
.-......- Plot -your entire living
space on graph paper,
using a one -fourth -inch --
to -the -foot scale. Indicate
the location of windows,
doors, electrical outlets,
heating units and other
architectural features
that would affect the _ _....
placement df furniture.
Cut out patterns
(templates) to.. scale,
representing the fur-
nishings you have and'
those you wish to pur-
chase. Place them on
graph paper in major
groupings: the con-
versational area in the
living room, the dining
room setting, sleeping
areas. Fit in smaller
supporting pieces and
then check to make sure
you've allowed adequate.
space around furniture
for easy movement.
Many young ..couples
feel that they will "make
do" at first -- buying less
expensive furniture to
start with and replacing
it with quality pieces
later on.
However, consider the
economics of purchasing
quality pieces at the
outset = well -made
furniture will last and in
the case of upholstered
pieces, can be recovered
at a later date if desired.
Start with the basics:
u
sofa, dining table, beds,
storage units. Keep in
mind that the basics you
select for your first home

symbolize your future
may form the nucleus for
future homes. It's
generally wisest to invest
the greatest sum possible
on' the items which will
receive the hardest wear
and -are of a more lasting
natgr.e. •
Well -made sofas,.
' upholstered pieces ':,and
chests of drawers will
provide i lasting pleasure.
Spend smaller °amounts
on the accessory pieces,t,
such as lamps,small„
tables, or drapes, as
these items go in and out
of fashion more .quickly,
and are also not as ex-
pensive to replace.
If you're unable to
afford a good quality'
sofa, you might consider
. par-chasing-,tw-o--or-three- ..
armless chairs. Two
placed side by side will
form a love seat and
three could equal .a sofa.
At a later date, the chairs
can: always be utilized as
occasional chairs, so
they're a good in-
vestment,
If your first hotne,isn't
overly spacious, you may
• want to consider ,pair-
chasing h piece of fur-
niture that can expand
when in use and take up
less space other times.
You might also con-
sider a sturdy card table
or a casual table in one of
the easy -to -care -for
materials, which might --
later
later be shifted into the
kitchen, or patio if you
move into a larger house.
There are also tab es,w, 1,,,..._,na,.uY
convenient drop -leaves,
which take up less space.
When considering
storage space, ideally,
