Roses and daisies
are most popular
sa ocal florists
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
•
Flowers play a
essential part in nearly
every - wedding
ceremony. They add
color, beauty, freshness
and perfume to the oc-
cassion. Since they are
such an important
element in decorating
and creating atmosphere,
planning well in advance
of the wedding day will
insure picture perfect
floral arrangements and
set the scene in a most
becoming manner.
The bride-to-be can
nevercontact the florist
too soon. Often this. im-
portant task is neglected
until the last minute,
resulting in unexpected
problems.
As soon as the date has
been set, the' minister
contacted and the
reception place reserved,
seea florist _.an '.get -him
or her involved in the
total wedding plans.
Wilf Denomme of W.J.
Denomme FlowerShdp in
Goderich suggests -that
brides-to-be contact his
shop for flowers at least a
month in advance to the
big day. Flowers' can be
arranged on shorter
notice but it is to the
bride's advantage not to
leave them until the last
moment, he says.
Ruthann, a florist at the
Bo K Barn in Goderich
says two to three weeks
usually allows enough
time for flower arranging
but she prefers two to
three months notice in
case there are several
weddings booked for the
same time period. The Bo
K Barn is part of Smith's
Farm and Garden
Centre, owned by Reg
Smith.
Bea Cooke of K.C.
Cooke Florist shop in
Clinton says a couple of
months is the best notice
for flower arranging,
especially if candelabras
are involved since each
florist only has so'many
of these.
Most florists are happy
to provide some free
hours of consultation. Be
sure to tell him or her all
the particulars: ° favorite
color of flower, your
budget for this purchase,
whether the ceremony
will be formal or in-
formal, held indoors or
out. The florist may also
want to know the style of , -,
the bridesmaids' dresses
and the height of each girl
so everything can be

specifically suited down
to the least little detail.
Sometimes if a swatch of
material from the
bridesmaids' dresses can
be taken into the florist,
the flowers can be
matched against it_ for
color co-ordination.
Disclosing the date
immediately ranks high
in importance as some
types of flowers may not
be available at that time.
' Be aware that seasons
can influence the choice
of color sehernes.' A
midwinter wedding
scheduled sometime in
December may use all
red and white flowers to
tie in with the Christmas
holidays. A fall wedding,
on the other •hand, may
incorporate shades of
yellow, gold and • bronze
with assorted dry foliage
and pods. '
Mr. Denomme says •he
has found that ` red
remains_ a popular._color—
for the bride's bouquet
but the colors of the
bridesmaids' bouquets
vary with the colors of
their dresses.
Ruthann says she
has found pastel shades,
especially yellows and
pinks to be the most
popular colors for
•
wedding bouquets:
Mrs. Cook 'says she has
found no one particular
color to be more popular
than the others and has
worked with them all.
A 'wedding .', held out-
doors calls for casual
arrangements of garden
type . flowers such as•.
daisies, larkspur and
delphinium. A large
amount of dried foliages
may also be interspersed
among, the flowers to
create a natural out-
doorsy atmosphere.
An indoor wedding
requires less casual floral
groupings so is more
suited to traditional
mixtures of roses, car-
nations or orchids. Much
less, if any at all, of the
dried woodsy varieties
are utilized for indoor
arrangements.
Important to all new
brides are the personal
bouquets that she and her
attendant's will carry.
Mr. Denomme says at
his shop, daisies,
sweetheart _,noses -and -
baby's breath are the
most popular for wedding
bouquets. Ruthann
says roses and daisies are
chosen most often at the
Bo K Barn too. And Mrs.
Cook says the most
