Varna
By Mary Chessell
Last Sunday was
probably the most
beautiful day we had all
*inter, with the frost
turning the countryside'
into a. fairyland in the
xn9rning, and the
pleasant afternoon
temperatures, Certainly
it was a perfect' day for a
toboggan, party, and
Many 'families were on
the hill at Tom and Willa
Rathwell's, on the in-
vitation ,of George and
..Mary- of the Verna
General Store.
The parents were
having asmuch fun as the
kids, and several
snowmobiles made the
trip to the top of the hill
easier. Tom Rathwell had
his beautiful team of
'Belgians harnessed to the
,sleigh....Ai: _._.draw people
back to the • hill. The
crowd consumed eight
pounds of wieners at
suppertime, then went
back for more
tobogganing. And some
city people wonder what
folks do for fun in a small
community!
Barbara Consitt, ad
salesperson for the Huron
Expositor, attended the
Ontario Weekly
Newspaper Association
Convention at the Hotel
Toronto on Friday and
Saturday, and accepted
the award for the best
local advertising on
behalf of the Expositor.
The following Varna
and area children per-
formed in the Clinton
"Stars on Ice" show on
Friday evening: Robyn
Norman, Susan Kirton,
Krista McAsh, Brian and
Paul Hill and Lori Con-
sitt. Lori•did a lovely solo
number, and took part in
several other numbers.
Quite a number of men
and boys from here were
involved in Minor Hockey
Dray at Hensall on
Saturday. Scott Kirton
and Jim Hill, who play for
the Hensall Novice team,
each scored a goal in
their 6 - 1 win over
Exeter. Jim received the
MVP award.
An Old -Timers game
was played, with the
Varna Old -Timers vic-
torious over Hensall by a
.9-4 score. Gerald Hayter
was picked as the most
valuable player????
Scott Consitt plays on
"the Hensall Juvenile
team, and they won 7-4 in
overtime against
Goderich in their first
playoff game.
The Playground
Associatipa of Huron
Centennial School,
Brucefield, sponsored a
dance at the Recreation
Centre in Vanastra on
Saturday night, George
and Ruth Townsend of -
RR 3, Seaforth were the
lucky winners of the door
prize.
Members of Goshen
Sunday .School had lunch
at the church following
morning service on
Sunday, then spent the
afternoon bowling.
Lori Consitt took part in
figure skating com-
petitions in Stratford a
week ago Sunday. On
Sunday, Feb. 16, her
brother Paul participated
in several events at the
Special Winter Games at
the UWO campus in
London. He won a silver
medal in skating.
"Responsible
Freedom" was the theme
for the World Day of
Prayer Service, which
was held on Thursday
evening in Goshen
church. The service. was
prepared by Christians in
Thailand, and based on
scriptures from Exodus 3
and 16, and Paul's Ietters
to the Romans, 6 and 8,
Galatians 5 and James 2.
After reports from the
Bible study groups were
discussed, Rev, Brow
gave a very good surr-
mary of the study.
During the prayer
service, a lovely duet
"Did You Think To Pray"
was sung by Linda
Linfield and Marjorie
Hayter. Only ten women
from Varna attended, as
several were ill with flu
and colds.
Business/tneetings took
place following the
service. With more
donations received and a
refund on the amount
paid to the owner of the
gas grills, the treasurer
reported a profit of $323
from the pancake supper.
