The Lucknow Lancers
will carry a one -game
lead in the best -of -seven
series against the
-Goderich Sailors when game the teams meet
Lucknow this Friday.
The Lancers took
lead. with a
overtime victory here
Sunday scoring three
times in the overtime
session.
The second me of the
series is scheduled for
Lucknow this Friday at
8.34 p.rn. and the third
game will be in Goderich
Sunday, March 16 at 2.30
p.tn.
The Sailors fought an
uphill battle all afternoon
here Sunday. They
overcame a rash of
manpower disadvantages
in the second periodand
scored four times in the
final period to tie the
game and send it into
overtime. The tying goal
came with one second
remaining in regulation
time and goaltender, Bob
ynatyk on the bench in
favor of an extra for-
ward.
But their good fortune
ran out in the overtime as
Lucknow scored three
times in the span of a
minute-. Goderich replied
with a single goal late in
the 10 minute overtime
period but their efforts_
'fell two goals shy.
The Lancers led 2-1
after one period and
clung to a 3-2 lead after
two periods. Lucknow
could have put the game
away in the second period
as they enjoyed a two-
man advantage for over
four minutes.
The teams opened up
offensively in the final
period with Goderich
outscoring Lucknow 4-3 to
tie the game 6-6. The
Lancers led 6-4 with less
than six minutes
remaining but Scott
Parks scored at 16.27 and
Paul Kelly was credited
with poking in the tying
goal in the final second.
But Lucknow put Wm'
momentum on the shelf
early in the overtime
pumping in three goals
before it was four
minutes old and boosting
the . Lancers into a 9-6
Llead.
Scott Parks got one
goal back ...for Goderich
with three minutes left in
the overtime but the
Sailors couldn't cofine
any closer.
Kelly,Parks and Don
Colquhoun scored two
goals each for Goderich
and Dan Duncan added a
single. Rick Fremlin
assisted on four Sailor
goals and Ron Sowerby
and Graham Hamilton
chipped in with three
assists apiece.

-▪ - ▪ March may seem like a funny month to do an
article on fishing tackle, but actually it's just in
time. Trout season officially opens in less than
two months, and other seasons seem to follow
close behind. When you start looking to your
fishing gear, you may find there is more to get.
ready than you. thought.
The fiberglass and graphite rods of today are
relatively maintenance free, but it is always a
good idea to check them over anyway.: Ferrules
should be examined and cleaned -'(a little bit of
. grit can jam a rod up tight) and the windings on
the guides examined for signs of fraying or
unravelling. A bit of spar varnish or ' clear
fingernail polish will generally fix these up.
While you're at it, check each guide for
roughness, The easiest way to do this is to run a
piece of nylon stocking through each one. If there
are any rough edges, the stocking will quickly
show it up. Replace guides if necessary, since the
slightest burr can cause the line to part when
'you're fighting a really big -one. Follow this up
with a check of the reel seat and handle, and
you've got your rod ready.
The reel is the next area for concern. The first
thing I Flo is strip off all the old line and throw it
into the garbage. This forces me to buy a new
spool of line before opening day and relieves me
from the temptation to strike out with last year's
mono still on the spool. Inspection plates are
opened and the gears get a light coat of white
grease, 'The friction plate (that's what varies
your drag)' is cleaned and dried and all screws
checked_ for tightness. The bail should be
examined and checked for rough spots (the same
way the guides were) and a good exterior in-
spection done. Your reelcan now join the rod as
"equipment ready to go". That also finishes off
the easy part of the chore.
The tackle box is going to turn out to be your
biggest chore and worthy of every minute ,you
give it. Don't plan on doing your whole 'tackle box
in one evening. The best thing to do is plan on
doing a bit each night over the space of several
days, perhaps while watching T.V. Start out by
organizing all your lures (they do tend to get
mixed up during the course of a season), and just
do 'a general tidy up. Badly damaged baits
should be discarded and some of that stuff you've
never used (and probably never will) should be
sorted out and tucked: av ay in a drawer
somewhere. Every hook should be examined to
make sure it hasn't been bent out of shape, and
the points sharpened up with a fine stone
designed for the purpose.
Now the so called "boring" tasks have been
cleaned up; the fun time begins. You've Ole
over your tackle and know what you have, so now
is the time to think about those "hot lures" you
lost last summer: No doubt you have some
favorites that you either lost on the bottom or
just plain wore out with use. If you start
replacing them one or two at a time (every
payday for instance), you won't be stuck with
that last minute scramble before the big trip. It's
also a goad idea to pick up a few extras, or
something new you'd like to give a try as well.
One of the most pleasant ways I've found to
shop for lures is by browsing through the Mepps
catalogue. The whole Mepps line is shown in this
catalogue along with lots of pictures of suc-
cessful fishermen with their catches. If you read
the captions carefully, noting just which lure. was
used in each case, you'll gain a lot of insight
about which spoon or spinner you should have in
your tackle box. The magazine also describes
how spinners should be fished under different
circumstances.
The Mepp's catalogue generally sells for 75
cents, but if you drop them a line and mention
my name, or this column, chances are they'll
send you one for free. Address all your inquiries
to Breck's Sporting Goods Co. Ltd., P.O. Box -BP
604, Sherbrooke, Quebec, J1H 5K5. If you're a fly
fisherman, ask them to include their brochure on
flies:
If you get your gear organized now, you will
not only be ready for opening day,.but you'll have
a much better chance of landing that "big one" if
he happens to gobble up your offering. With that
in mind, I'll wish you all "tight lines" for the
upcoming season.
