The Foot Ball Match -
The first game of foot ball, under the
auspices of the Exeter club, took place on
Good Fridaston the driving park grounds
the visiting; team being one of Sertforth.
The genies opened at 2 o'clock and eon-
tinuell until 3:30. The first three-quar-
ters of an hour the Sectfortle team succeed-
, ed in getting four games, tho remainder of
the time three, while the Exeter club got
none, thus in an hour and a half, the
Sesiortli team aent seven goals. Not-
withstanding that the Exeter team has
' had. but little practice, the members
handled themselves very well and the
Seeforth teem toward the close found
thern worthy antagonists. Members of
both dubs received some pretty rough
tveatinent innocently; but no person in-
jured. Snow heving fallen during the
forenoon the .ground was rendered very
slippery and muddy, which in itself was a
draw -back to the players, who seemed to
zit down altogether too often for auy
comfort oe to aid in the saceess and
progress of the game A returnmatch
will be Ideked ere lone, when we prophesy
that the Exeter boys, if they do not come
out vietorions'will occasion the Seaforth
club eoneiderable work. The attendance
ot Fritley's mach was good, and a collec-
tion to defray expenses was taken up.
The Carnival,
One of the most suecessfal carnivals
overheld in the roller rink, took place on
Friday evg., under the auspices of the
Exeter braes band. All available sitting
room was occupied, and many were stench
big. The lirst on the programme was a
one mile race for small boys. Three en-
tered, A. Spicer, G. Hriclinan, and W.
Vail. Thc race was a lively one until
two of the lads 'collided and fell, leaving
the boy Hyndina,n an easy winner of first
prize'Vail second. The next was a figure
eighteace, Three entries, Geo. Eacrett,
Jos. Davis and R. Davis. e -This race
occasioned considerable •laughter. The
three kept close together for several laps,
until, when making the turn at the south
end, Jos, Devie feet went from under
him, and before alighting upon the floor
lie;svcrit four ft into the air. Therace Wa
skated mit, Eacrett whining. Forcomic
costume which came next there were two
entries,Ino. Bowden "riding the goat"
and Dan'l Dyer "Dutchman,' . Although
Mr, Dyer's costume was comicals oomplete
aod far the hest, yet it could not be
classed other than character. Jim. Bat -
ben was consequently given first prize,
The next Was a five mile tace between
'Feathers, of Hareietoe'champiott of Wes-
tern Ontario, and Vail, of Exeter, chain -
pine of Huron Co., for the ohampionehip
of Western Ontario. Feathers took the
lead, but before many rounds Vail pessed
him, keeping the lead until the five miles
had been :skated, beating Feathers by one
' lap. It is eiossible that Feathers will
fon a challenge to Vail to ekete the race
tieser again et no distant date.
