Last week 'he was kept on his toes with the McGavirt,F_armer's Open Spiel . on Wednesdayand fti Mixed Invitational on Saturday . and Sunday, both of which went withoit a hitch. The winning rinks in . the McGitVin Spiel were: first 4raw: 1st Ken Innes (repeating his success of the previous year!) ; 2nd Dave Beattie; 3rd Doug Rathwell and the con- solation went to Mery Falconer. In the second, draw:first place went to Roy Pennington, 2nd Ralph Sieman; 3rd Gerry Lobb and the consolation to Al Simian. Because of the popularity of the Mixed Invitational, there were three, draws organized to try to accommodate the majority a rinks entered this year and this proved to be- a highly successful arrangement. The following teams were the winners in each of the draws, first draw: Bob and Mary Fotheringham -with Ray and Diane Beattie 2nd Roy and Joan BeuerMan with Ray and Janet Hiliebrecht; 3rd 'Gerry and joanne Lobb with Brian and . Cathy Westbrook and' the consolation , wentto Ron and Elsie Beuerman with Ralph and Carol Sienian. The second' draw: 1st, Dave and Mary -Jean. Beattie with john and Bev Elliott; 2nd, John and Isobel Moore with Bill and Millie Lobb; 3rd, Jim and Ann Cun- ningham with daughter, Marlene and Bruce McDonald and the con- solation was picked up by Bob and Sharon Wilson with Don and Joyce Weir. In the third draw, first place went to Bill Campbell and Kathryn Keyes with Al and Betty Randall; 2nd, Mike and Marilyn Thomas with Don and Diane Budnark; 3rd, Don and Wendy Trexneer with Fred and Mary Waltham and the consolation went to Chuck Robbins with Ann ' Foley and their friends. ' Last year from 19 starts, the five-year-old pacing mare by Winthrop Winthrop. Ensign, had one win, four seconds and one third, •good for $942. Already this year, she over $750 from only four races. ,Bowling news Molson's Crown Mixed I) The Orangoutangs and the Bears are tied in first place each with 91 points, leaving the Chimpanzees behind in third with 73 points. • The Laughing Hyenas have 69 points, the Pink • Elephants are - close behind . with 68 and the Bobcats have 66. The • Cheetahs and the Tigers-. are tied in last place with 65 points each. Jean Good had the ladies' high single of 236. Marj Moore had the high triple of 620 and the high average of 204. For the men, Ken Fidon had the high single of 320. Art Burt took the high triple with 822 and the high average with 233. Mixed League Rocky's Rollers are in first place with 102 points, and the S.C.A.B.S. are •behind in second place with 84. • The Bees have 82 and the M and M's follow with 81 points. The Die Dards have 79, Bob's Girls have \ 78, Different Strokes have 65 and Tom's Turkeys are behind in last place with only 43 points. Holmesville now takes a two to nothing game lead in their best of five semi-final series. In the men's scoring, Angus Hummel had the high single of 301, the. high triple of 677 and the high average of 221. Tuesday Ladies Boyes' Boucles are in the top position in the league with 123 points atid the Five Pins are second with 1161/2. Chessell's Cut -ups are third with 109 and Gwen's Ginghams have 106. The scoring remains close and a Touch of Velvet have 1051/2 points, while Nora's Notions are in last place with 981/2. Hilda Gerrits had the ladies' high single of 269 and the high triple of 600. Gerry Roebuck of Goderich was fourth with Cinda Meadows at Western Fair Raceway in London on Friday night, while Andy Hardy drove Prima Daisy to a third place spot 'for Roy Baynham of Kippen and John Bettke of Hensall. Neil McRann was fifth with Granny Grattan in the eighth for August De Groof of Clinton. On Saturday afternoon at - London, Gaitime Honor, a three-year-old filly by Scamp Direct- Malinda Ann, finished fourth in her first lifetime start for owner -trainer - driver Frank of Clinton. • Ray Mathers was fiCh with Granny Mathers for the Broken M Stables of Goderich in the third, as was Gaelic Boy owned by Allan MacDonald of Goderich in the eighth. Randy McLean finished fourth with True Mix in the sixth. Western Fair Raceway will have a short holiday until March 14 when their spring meet commences. Barrie Raceway opened for their 1980. seasoh on Saturday, March 1. They will also have racing �n Wed- nesday night. (photo by Milvena Erickson) sports • Mustangs take lead in finals • By Bryan Marriage The Clinton Mustangs took a 2-1 lead in the Junior 'C' final this week with a pair of back to back victories on Sunday and Tuesday. Port Elgin won the opening game 7-3 last Friday night, and the Stangs won the next two by -scores of 5,4 -and 8-6. The fourth game of the r series will be played in Clinton tonight (Thur- sday) at 8:30. The fifth game of the series will likely be played in Southampton on Friday night at 8:30 due to the lack of ice in Port Elgin and the sixth game if necessary will be played in Clinton on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. In the opening game last Sunday night, Port Elgin -grabbed an early 2- 0 lead in -the first period although the Mustangs fired " 19 shots at • goaltender Dave Rosner. • The Mustangs fell behind 3-0 early in the second period before Paul Helesic got the Stangs on the board with a- goal assisted by Bill Pickering and .John Hart. Port Elgin bounced right back with two more goals before Phil Arthur . - Stephenson and Steve Arbour to end the peridd Arbour. • The Port Elgin team atT5h- 2e. third period was again in the last minute pulled within one goal clearly Port Elgin's as and a half and then pulled they scored twice to go ahead 7-2 before Clinton scored in the last minute of play, by Bill Pickering, - assisted by Paul Helesic and Greg Flowers to end the opening game 7-3. Sunday's game was a different story, however, •as Port Elgin scored in the first minute of play and then 'Bill Pickering tied the • game five minutes later, assisted by Greg Flowers and Gary Peters. The Mustangs pulled Tuesday night's game was an action packed game as the Bears scored twice in the first period, while the Stangs yvere:, held .scorelesS., .The -Mustangs bounced back with five goals in the second period, four •of them in a two minute span, while Port Elgin ahead in -the second-rem-ained-scoreiess•.------ period on a goal by Dave Stepheffariasisted by Phil Arthur, before the midway mark of the period. The Bears evened the score on a powerplay two minutes later, but Bill Pickering scored his second of the game assisted by Paul Helesic and Gary Peters to end the period 3-2 for the Stangs. The Mustangs went aheadby two goals early in the third period, as Mike Pinch scored, assisted by Magnus Johanrjison and Claus Westburg. The' Bears purled within one goal again at the 12 minute mark, when the Stangs defense • got sloppy in front of their own net. Phil Arthur gave the Mustangs their two goal lead again as he scored the eventual winner assisted by Dave the goaltender for an extra attacker, but their efforts failed as the Stangs controlled the ..puck for the final minute of play. The Clinton marksmen in the second period were Mike Pinch assisted by Magnus Johannson, Bill Pickering assisted by Greg Flowers and Paul Helesic, Greg Flowers assisted by Paul Helesic, Steve Arbour assisted by Phil Arthur and Dave Stephenson and Phil Arthur assisted by Claus Westburg and Steve Arbour. Pee Wee hockey team travelled to Mitchell to take part in. the 24th Annual Tour-, nament. Their first game at 9 • a.m. Was against Mit- chell. Unfortunately they lost by a. score of 0-2; however, Clinton goals were scored by Danny Horton assisted by Frank Schloendorf and Rebett • Dupee assisted by Danny Horton. In the second game played against Rarriston the. boys were' more successful and .defeated Harriston by a score of 6- 4. D. Horton led the at- tack with four goals; two unassisted, one assisted by R. Dupee and one • assisted by F. Schloett: t--Dupee scored two goals assisted by. • Horton and Schloendorf. Thisentitled the team to advance to the finals. The final game was played against Arthur. Clinton took the lead 2-0; 1 one goal by R. Dupee unassisted and one *assisted by Horton and Bobby Ladd. Arthur tied the score and then ,went ahead 3-2 by the lend of the second period. At the beginning. of the third period Arthur 'scored a quick goal to make it 4-2. The Clinton boys came storming back and scored • three unanswered goals - two by D, Horton and one Arby Bobby Ladd to win54.
