Afghanistan was 'already pro -Soviet; the country had a. communist government Why, then did the Russians attack? In the last few, weeks.it has become more evident that after seeing the seething chaos following Iran's revolution —them Soviets were ex- tremelyAgitated over the possibilities of a. Moslem rebellion occurring and another free Islamic state developing on their borders. Right across from Iran and Afghanistan lies a huge Russian Moslem population of some 50 million people. With two free Islamic stales on their borders the Soviets undoubtedly felt that these Moslems too might rebel. Once in the country the Russians replaced the government with a puppet government. Russia controlled and proceeded to attempt to put down the. Afghan rebels. There has been sotne speculation that this may become the Russian Vietnarn. It is true that Russian . casualties ,are mounting heavily and that there have been ntitner0Us deSertiOnS from the ' Afghan .and Russian armies to the re e s. However, the Russians are fighting close to their own country With superior weapons 'and better trained troops. Also, _unlike the North Vietnarne.se, the Afghanistan rebels are not being -supplied by any large foreign powex, and their weaponry is definitely inferior. However, if indeed Pakistan begins, tran- sferring U.S. weapons to therebels or Chinabegins supplying better weaponry the Russians could -be in for a 1onion battle. If the Russians are out to get Mid Eastern oil their invasion does make sense. Afghanistan provides a port on the Indian Ocean, something the Russians • have wanted for a long time. Also Afghanistan provides an excellent Strike base from which to launch ,an attack on the oil fields of the Persian Gulf. Finally, if the U.S.S.R. intends to attack - the 'Middle East, I do not believe it will happen soori. The Russians will wait until interest in the region has died down and the fervor of Iran's revolution has quieted, And if Russia does attack, and the U.S. follows Carter's mandate to repel it by force, the decade ahead may. be the worst the world has ever seen.
