Hy Shelley. Mcpbee
On, .February 1,. I was worldlyand
gorgeous.
The idea took a:little
ettin used
e to.'but after countless trips to the mirror
for glances of reassurance I finally.
accepted the idea. Unfortunately -my
u elywnat
y
new look it didn't last and by the next
.morni.ng, nnYvold face had resurfaced
and my gorgeous look lay smeared on•
the pillowcase.
1I'm not sure that. I'll ever be able to
re -mate that look. It took : John
Maxwell,. a Hollywood • professional
snake -up artist, over as hour to bring
out all my good facial features 'and
disguise the not -so -good ones, but at
least I now know my face a little
• better, its'- shape, the colors that
compliment it, and how to play up my
good qualities.
Now I may not be as beautiful as all
-those-" Hol•lywood-ladi•e•s-th John's -
worked do during his 14 -year career
as a make-up artist, but he was polite
enough 'not to dwell on those bad
features, which I won't mention here. -
Instead he dressed up Iny better
features and even said I had a jawline
like Linda Lavin. That's the television
star who plays Alice, you know.
John gave personal make-up
demonstrations to some 15 ladies
during his one -day stop at. Edith Anne
lI'air Fashions in Clinton, and Iolike
Many of the other ladies that day,
44zaule away with a new look and better
understanding of ray face and
,
cosmetics.
I've been reading beauty
magazines for years, tryin to figure
out my shape of face and attern g in
to keep up with all the new colors on
the market in order to make myself as
attractive•as humanly possible.
But as John. pointed out, each facers
very individualized and other than
proper skin care, there is no one set of
particular rules that a woman can
,follow.
Re works 'like a doctor, with a bit of
added •flair. At the age of 28 and with
years of experience, he seems to be
able to take one look at his subject and
know what is needed.
-Sitting in the -beautyi --
hair pinned back in clips and the
morning's carefully applied make-up
cleaned off, I felt and looked pretty
• pitiful. •
"What if he can't help me," I
thought.
But with the complete control and
ease of person who knows his -job,
John began what I thought to be an
immense task. First came the

and: the Moisturizing Skirt Balancer,

getting more° flushed, theroom was
getting hotter'and
I was' beginning to
lose control. Jdhn assured me,
however, that good 'skin care is one of
the most iniportan.t aspects to
remember in cosmetics,; `especially
for young women who want to have'
nice skin as they grow older. a
I needed help in this line. My skin is
dehydrated, a problem caused by, this
climate. John also pointed out thati
already have a few wrinkles, crow's
feet around the eyes and here 1
thought they were sort of nice'
showing that 1 was friendly and that I
• laughed a lot.
After -'the" facial - treatment; we
moved on to make-up and from
hundreds of bottles, tubes, jars and
compacts, he picked out my colors.
He determined that I have sallow skin
and the make up colors I should use
are the blue and red toned. According
to John, determining your individual
colors is another important aspect of
cosmetics. For instance, I shouldn't
use any colors with yellow or orange
shades, or f'il look as if f have
jaundice.
John explained that once you :have
established the shades that corn-

'trends, like the plum season, or peach
time.
".
To begin my new look, John chose a
Fair onceaien which helped cover
those rough spots .and black circles
under the eyes and Medium Glut.
Foundation and Shimmering Tran
slucent Powder. I was beginning to
feel good already, the names of these
products sounded so good .
Sunshine Cherry Powder Blusher
was added next. It just not smeared
into your cheeks, but is almost
worked in artistically. My blusher
was blended in along the cheekbone,
not to .close to the nose, and taken

my eyes. This, John explained, was
done to give my face the illusion of
extra length. It seems that following
the style set my the rest of my body, I
have a short, square face.
Moving onto abetter feature were
m y wide set, brown eyes. These were
made to look bigger than ever with,
can you believe it, three different
colors of eyeshadow, ranging from
pink, burgandy to grey. To think, I

can hardly manage to get one color on
in the mornings, That was only the to
`half the eye, Thed
f of y bottom half had
blue pencil along the wet ledge of the
lower lid and brown pencil on the
outer third of the eye and pulled
around, finished off with .eyeliner.
Then carne cream blusher to highlight
the brow bone and the touch under the
eye to neutralize those . dark cirlces
that the concealer mustn't have
caught. Then last but not least,
mascara.
This was beginning to sound like a
medical operation, and looking like
one too, as I sat in the chair with
miracle worker John on one side and
Edith Anne owner ' Ramona Hum-
phreys on the other, handing the
master his supplies and writing down
the procedure as we went along.
Now a look_in the mirror showed
_
--g is ening, smooth skin, and these
huge, black eyes, but the hair still
wasn't up to much and somehow my
lips had disappeared into the rest of
my face. That's why John used Muted
Auburn liner and Caviar Brown color
on .my lips, both dark shades to so my -
mouth wouldn't get lost under all
those eyes.
Then a quick curl of the hair, to

make it a little softer around my
sharp features, and voila, a beauty
had been born, or so they kept telling
me.
I kept on g these black eye

and these red, 'red lips when I looked
in the mirror. I was used to just bland
old me but John and Ramona ex-
plained that the make-up I was
wearing was heavy for -the day, but
both assured that I was ready for a
night at the disco or -a modelling
session.
And so, after an afternoon of
dashing to the mirror, I finally got
used to my new look at did in fact go
out dancing that night, but just as i~
was getting used those black eyes and
red lips they suddenly seemed to
vanish.
And here I am, in a more worse

desperatelyattmept to re-create that
look. With my list of make-up in front
of me, I try to remember if the Petal
Frost goes on before the Candied
Burgandy and Pewter Frost eye
shadow and if I've got the liner only
on the outer third of my lower lid.
Maybe with 'practice; I'll have a
worldy and gorgeous look again
someday.
