Centennial Duke, one of very few pacing bred horses' thatprefers trotting, had his second 1980• win at Orangeville Raceway on Thursday night, The five-year-old son of Ferric Hanover - Dove -r Duiehess _wasp timed in 2:12.3, which Was identical to his first lifetime win on January 6. Centennial Duke was raised by Lorne Tyndall of Clinton but is now owned by the Rapson's Gorlyn . Acres of RR 3, Clinton, and was driven in his winning mile by Paul Shakes. Incidentally, the well- known stallions Ferric Hanover and Tarport Arnie have .eft our part of the country andare now in British, Columbia. The :pacers Argyel Laddie 1:57.2, Iron Dale - 1:58,2 and Wintario 1:59.1 were Western. Ontario raised' performers, by Ferric Hanover, who ° took records better than two minutes, while Tarport Arnie was credited with Evil Doer - 2:00, Little Arnie - 2:00 as well as. Willas Marnie ° 2:01 and Melo Victory 2:04.2. • At Western Fair Raceway in London on Friday night, Randy Henry of Goderich .was a winner driving Crimson Josie for owner Bruce Volland in the second race or trotters, . while Gerry Roebuck of Goderich finished fourth with Cinda Meadows in the eighth. Dennis Jewitt of Clinton was fourth with Janets' Belle Dariel on February 23. At Windsor Raceway on Saturday afternoon, Conray Kevin, owned by Wayne Horner of Clinton was second for driver Eric McEwan, while Benmiller Buddi, owned in the same race .with Verdun Vanstone on: the bike. , h'ierrywood crHoot, owned 'by Nancy Holmes„ of Clinton, trotted to a third 'place ..finish with :terry Duford ' up at Greenwood, Raceway in Toronto on February 23. At London on Monday night,, Gerry Roebuck of Goderich was fourth with LionelJl�blly Itillean' for Lionel Arbour in the first and fifth withHancy Meadow. Arrochar 'Ruth, owned by Arnold Doak of Goderich, finished second in the ' fourth. Frank MacDonald of Clinton had a fifth with Wee Devil E for Albert Deblock of Lucan in the fifth. Dennis Jewitt was fourth driving Sing Outs Hope, that Terry Rutledge trains at Clinton, for Harold Eyre of Dublin. Randy McLean won the ninth with his five-year- old Ack Ack pacer, Golden Ack in 2:09.2. This was the first win this year for Golden Ack, although he has had one second and two thirds from eight starts. Mixed Spielon weekend The two-day Mixed Invitational Spiel, the big event of the Seaforth Curling season, is all set and ready to go this weekend. , The - spiel is sponsored by Ball Macaulay Ltd. and will host 24 teams for thetwo days of keen curling activity- - two six -end games on ,Saturday, one eight -ender on Sunday, a dance .Saturday night, breakfast or brunch on Sunday, of course lots of good food and a friendly social atmosphere. The spiel became so popular this year that it has been extended to three draws to ac- commodate -eight ad- ditional teams and this still. left some teams on the waiting list. Let's welcome all the visitors and wish everyone good curling! - The McKinley Chicken Spiel was a great success last Saturday with lots of good looking turkeys (no pun intended!) being taken home by the winners. The overall winning team was -en=-- ter ed by Jack Armstrong, with David Ste. Marie, Ken Faber and Andrew Twynham who received individual trophies for their efforts. The team of Lyle Yost was right on the tail of the winner's, tying the points total but finishing in second spot. Bill Fleming and- his motely crew finished third and Jack Dick gained fourth place. The consolation prize went to Jack Coleman. Seaforth Ladies were busy on ' the Bonspiel circuit last Wednesday with two teams travelling to Exeter and one each to Goderich and Belmore. Carol Innes skipped her team of Irma Pryce, Joan • and Elsie Beuerman to a second place win at Goderich. Millie Lobb, Wendy Tremeer, Sharon Wilson ' and Gail ' King placed sixth out of 14 - teams at Belmore. The two teams at Exeter - were: Mary -Jean Beattie with Marg Fleming, Roxanne Brown and Peggy Menzies and Ann Cunningham with Lorine Denomme, Donna Wood and Joyce Hilderley; the former bringing home the consolation prize.. Well they did it, but they weren't allowed to bring home a trophy! ,Bill and Grace Campbell and John and Gwen Patterson won the two- day mixed spiel at Hamilton's Glendale Golf and Country Club, for the third straight year a first for that spiel. However they had to be content with receiving a gold medal each as .a souvenir -,-the Club' being determined not to part with that trophy. In addition they were each presented with a silver tray and a wee gift from Hiram Walker, The team won all five of their games as they curled to victory. "When you're hot-yotl:'re hot, eh?'" The Cash Spiel in Goderich last weekend proved successful for the two Seaforth rinks who were participating. Third prize went to Gord Pryce, skip, with Doug Rowcliffe, Mike Thomas and Neil Dolmage, while the Gerry Walter rink with Bob Wilson, Don Tremeer and Larry Sturdy was awarded the consolation. In the Huron High School Playoffs, held last week' at Vanastra, Seaforth's girls' and boys' teams each tallied two wins and one loss. Representing the school for the girls were: Vicky Ste. Marie, 'skip, with Susan Primeau, Ann Ribey and Betsy Ste. Marie and for the boys, Brian Moore, Brad Rice, Mark Underwood and Robert Thompson. Jarvis holds Perth MITCHELL --Bill Jarvis, Conservative party candidate for Perth, was, returned to office in the recent federal election. Mr. Jarvis, in a narrow victory, beat out Liberal candidate Bob McTavish, 15,177 votes to 12,075. NDP candidate John Davies finished third with 4,634 while Marxist- Leninist candidate Salah Bachier trailed the field with 59 votes. Mr. Jarvis Won the Perth riding for the Conservatives for the fourth straight time. yHowever, when the Clark government fell, Mr. Jarvis lost his post as secretary of state for federal -provincial relations as well as the huge majority he had previously held among the riding's 45,815 voters. Congratulations • to Maureen Hutchinson and her junior team Brian Ruston, Paul Ellis and Patty Coleman. They won - the second.- draw and. as such are recipients of the Longstaff trophy, The winner of the Division 13 Playdowns for the. intermediate men's team was decided last Sunday when Meaford defeated Harriston. (News -Record photo) sports Stangs set for league championship by Bryan Marriage The Clinton Mustangs. polished off the Wingham Ironmen in three straight games this past week in OHA Central Junior C semi-final action. - The Mustangs now move on to play the Port Elgin Bears for 'the league championship, possibly beginning on Friday night in Port Elgin. The Mustangs beat Wingham last Friday 6-3 and then on Sunday the Stangs pulled out. a 7-6 victory in the final minute of play. In the third and final game Tuesday night, the Mustangs emerged with a 5-1 victory to end the series. The Mustangs opened the scoring last Friday night on: a goal by Steve Arbour-anudd"—then -Wingham- - snoredon a powerplay to even the score. Paul Helesic scored the next Mustang goal to end the period 2-1.' The second ,period was similar to the first as Phil Arthur and Dave Stephenson scored for the Stangs, while Wingham. replied once. Greg Flowers handled all.the Mustang scoring in the third period as he scored a pair, the last one into an empty net, while Wingham managed one goal on a powerplay midway through. the period. Murray East, piper and Joey Wall, drummer led the colour party into the church sanctuary followed by the Path- finders, Girl Guides, Brownies, }leavers, Cubs, Boy Scouts and leaders for both organizations. , The colour- party consisted of Karen Cook, Pathfinder; David Moffat, Boy Scout; Carol Beane, Girl Guide;, Jeff Brown, Cub; Brownies, Andrea Carlin, Jody Murray; Beavers, Paul Dining and Bradley Jewitt. The Rev. J. Broadfoot welcomed the visitors and gave an interesting sermon using "Be Prepared". Following the church service, a film was - presented in the Parish Hall for the boys and girls. The coach of the Dutch National- team, Hans Westberg was on hand to see the game Tuesday night and to watch hisson- play onplay for the first time this year. He was on his way to Ottawa after coming from the Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., where he promised to do a tittle better next year. The Netherlands coach was very impressed with the game and the style in which the Clinton Mustangs played, showing good hustle and heads up hockey with very little roughness during the game. As previously men- tioned, the Mustangs series was not set up at press time but the second game of the series against Port Elgin could be Saturday at 8:30 p.m. or _Sunday at 7100 p.m. in Clinton.
