The Clinton Mustangs staged a dramatic comeback in their best. of five playoff series with the Kincardine Kinucks, tivhen they came -back 'to win the series after being -down two games to none. The Stangs got on the winning track in the second period Friday night with this goal, and never looked back, winning the game, and two more on Sunday night and Tuesday night. (News -Record photo) , sports Mustangs stage dramatic comeback in fast games By Bryan Marriage The Clinton Mustangs stormed back to win the last three games of their best of five series and end Kincardine Kinucks hopes of advancing to the second round of Central Jr. "C" playoff hockey. After Kincardine won the opening two games, the Mustangs defeated Kincardine. last Friday 7- 4, dumped Sunday 8-4, and won onTuesday night 5-1. The Mustangs will now advance to play the Wingham Ironmen in the next series, also a best of five. The . opening game will likely be in Clinton on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and then to Wingham; Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The third game .would be in Clinton, possibly next Tuesday night. The Clinton Mustangs fell behind last Friday night 3-1 at the end of the first period, but rebounded with four unanswered goals in the second ' period, and followed with two more in the third period. , The Mustang marksmen in Seaforth holds spied By Drusilla Twynham The Rowcliffe Motors Bonspiel was an out- standing success 'last Saturday, thanks to good organization, good prizes and the great catering of Wendy Tremeer, Millie Lobb • and their lady helpers! The spiel has become so popular that they already have entries for next year. The Clarke rink from Exeter placed first in the early draw with second place going to Glen,,. Hat'ter's rink, third' to Roy :Beuerman and the consolation to Ken Moore- - all from Seaforth • and area. The Harriston rink emerged as winners for division 13B in in - .termed -rate playdowns here last Sunday, Six teams were in . the competition and Seaforth's entry, the Jim Cunningham rink with Bill Lobb, Bill Fleming and Clarence Denomme .were knocked out in the semi-finals. A further round of the comPetition will be held' here on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. when Harriston will meet the winner of Division 13A. The Mixed 'Sweetheart' Draw got off to a good start last week - the Thursday teams playing appropriately enough on Valentine's Day. Judging by the scores on the late .draw, there must be some evenly matched teams - three tie games! The second draw for ladies, men and juniors were completed last week with the following teams emerging as winners:. In Ladies, for the Golding Trophy, Marg Fleming, skip with Roxanne Brown, Drusilla Twynham and Marlene Reeder edged out Ann Cunningham's rink by half a point! In the men's division, there are two winning teams who will play off to decide an overall winner, these are: 7 p.m. - 'Steve Brown, . Don Deighton, itn Rose and Frank Nigh, and 91p.m. - Bill Campbell, Gerry Lobb, John 'Underwood and Ross Lovett. There .are two Bon - spiels upcoming at the Club - The McKinley Chicken Spiel . is scheduled for Saturday and the popular McGavin Farmer's Open - which incidentally is filled to capacity - is scheduled for Wednesday Feb. 27. Good curling to the., Campbell -Patterson rink off to Hamilton this weekend to try for their third win in three years• at the Mixed Spiel there., Let's wish them luck and hope they bring home the trophy this time for keeps. 4-H news The fist meeting of the Clinton III, 4-H "Your corner of the World" was held Wednesday, February 13 at the home of Mrs. L. Murch. The leader handed out the members' pamphlet Election of officers took place. They are: president, Barb Young; vice-president Beth Sandercock; secretary, Kathy Staddon; and press reporter Johanna van Diepen. The mem- bers chose a name for this project and it will be known as the "Knotty Ladies". Mrs. P. Sandersock discussed the in- troduction to macrame and the history of macrame and ' Mrs. L. Murch discussed the material and equipment for macrame and the different kinds of knot- ting material the game were Phil Arthur with a pair, Dave Stephenson, Greg Flowers, Claes Westburg, Gary Peters and Bill Pickering. Last Sunday's game in Kincardine saw .the teams battled to a 1-1 tie after the first period with Rab Stovel scoring for the Stangs. The Clinton boys„ opened up a 4-2 lead after two periods, of play as Paul Helesic; Dave Stephenson, and Rob Stovel s'oored. -The third period was dominated by the Mustangs as they out' - scored the Kinucks 4:2 and fired 18 shots at the Kincardine ..goaltenders. Gary Peters, Phil Arthur, Paul Helesic and Jeff Ball handled the Mustang scoring. John Page handled 25 shots in the Clinton net while Ken. Doucette and Jamie Cooper combined for 44 saves for the Kinucks. - In Tuesday night's winning performance, the, Mustangs opened the scoring on a powerplay goal by Dave Stephenson and then Paul Helesic put the Mustangs ahead by two before -the Kinucks scored on a powerplay late in the period. - The line of Mike Pinch, Paul Helesic and Bill Pickering did all the ng damage to the Kinucks in the second period, as both Pinch and Pickering each scored goals • while Helesic drew the assists. The third period was scoreless until the last minute of play when Kincardine pulled the goaltender and it back- fired and Claes-Westberg scored into an empty net. John Page 'handled the Clinton goaltending stopping 30 shots while Ken Doucette handled 44 shots for the Kinucks. First place at stake First place remains undecided as the CHHL's regular season comes to a close this week. A victory over Holmesville Wed- nesday would clinch top spot for Sunset Golf. Should Holmesville- win the Rockets would then need to win their Scoringrecords. The . playoffs pit one against four and two against three in the opening round. In last week's action, O'Briens Meats closed out their regular schedule in third place by losing 7 - 5 to Holmesville on Thursday and beating Sunset 7 - 2 on Sunday. O'Briens' record ends with 16 wins, 11 losses and one tie for 33 points. The Burger Bar' also split two games last week. Wednesday, they lost to Sunset 6 -. 3 and then Sunday finished their season with a 7 - 3 victory over Whetstones. Steve Buchanan' five goals in that game, giving him 29 for the season, all but clinched the scoring title. Ray Volland of Sunset is in second place with 25 goals and one game remaining. The Royals •end in fourth place with a record of 10 wins, 15 losses and three ties for 23 points.
