As Uskxrucran Dnarn.-Doily we get
proof of the uncertainty of death, and in
some instancee stinging proof. Of the
many deaths that leave ocetirrea in this
township of late the demise of one which
we are about to chronicle, is indeed a
valuable lesson to those who are living in
a reckless way: We refer to the 'death of
Allarew Rankin,. 34 young and 'promising

years and 6 monelii. Two weeke ago the

• WHAT ARle THE IMPTJRITIES?
The reeort of the Ohio State Dairy and
Food Commission on baking powders show
a large amount of residuum or impurity to
exist in many of those articles. The fignre

The question naturally nrises in the minds
of thoughtful customers. Of what does this
impurity or residuum consist? In the ease
of the 6401 namea powder thero has been
recently givea • the result of an analysis
made by Prof. 0. F. Chandler, of Columbia
College, N. Y., late member of the Neve
York State Board of Health, whieh partially
runplies the missing information, and as
the manufaoturers of this particular powder
are continnously callimg for the publieation
of all the ingredients used. ni baking
powders, there can be no objection to its
statement here. Among the impurities
Prof. Chandler found Cleveland's powder to
contain a large amount of Rochelle Salts,
6.49 per centof lime, with alumina, StiLrOh
and water, in quantities not statea. Aluni
jg a substance declared bY the highest
authorities to be hurtful. If the balance of
this reeidurun in all the powders named is
made up largely of alum, 50 21 is knevvn to
be in some, the publie would like to know it.
Another official test that shall go quite to
tbe bottom of the matter seems to be de.
