Every once in awhile I become
unusually ambitious, and . with

bomb (my 1971 Dodge). I've know.
how oto open the hood, check the
water, the oil level and the add,
washer fluid to that little plastic
container. Usually everything
checks out fine and I congratulate
myself on my fine mechanical
mind,
However, the other day a car
check didn't go right. Everything
under the hood carne out A -okay
according to . mine minimual
knowledge, but after a look under
the body and a quicktirepressure
check, I found one tire only con-
tained six pounds of air. I knew this
wasn't right.
I considered my options. I could
wait until a kind male friend could
help me refill my deflated tire,or I
could limp over to the gas station
and repair the situation myself. -
Unfortunately, I am not the least
bit knowledgeable about car tires,
but I decided it was time to learn.
Went tb the first garage I could find
.aid-.pulled-up-to-the•.air .um•p..i had_
seen other people fill their tires
dozens f- times, it couldn't be too
hard to do.
Took the little knob .off my tire,
lost it in the snow. Found it 'again
and proceeded to read what I found
to be limited instructions on the
pump.
I knew enough to set the dial at
the required number of pounds and
that the nozzle on the hose had to fit
over the little nozzle on the tire. T
had everything under control until
I realized that my tire was not
getting any bigger and the bells
that I heard when other people
filled their tires was not ringing for
me.
No matter how I tried I couldn't
get the bells to ring. I reasoned that
themachine was either broken or
frozen and moved on to another gas
station.
I was much wiser now, I put, the
• little knob off my tire in my pocket.
Set the dial again, connected the
nozzles: and waited for the: bells.
They didn't ring.
Not wanting 'to seem ` dumb, I
continued to pretend to know what
I was doing,. but obviously the
man new otherwise:—
admitted to him that I had never
used one of these contraptions
before, but lie, being a real gen-
tleman, explained that I >s doing
everything right, but only had to,
take the entire hose off the hook.
When that was done, the air started
to flow, the bells started ringing
and my tire began to inflate.
I cursed those people who make
air pumps for not including all
directions on the machine. How
was I to know that the entire hose
had to be removed before the thing
would work?
My tire grew bigger and bigger
:and the bels dinged away, but how,
I wondered, would I know when my
tire had the right amount of air in
it.
Fearing a massive explosion, I
stepped back and made a check

air. The bells kept ringing, the .tire

down and yelled to Ron, the nice
garage man, "How do I know when
it's full?" •
'He informed me that the bell
would stop ringing. ,
So I continued, again cursing
those air pump people for not
telling me that on the directions.'
At last the bells stopped, my air
pressure gauge read 28 pounds, the
amount I needed and I drove away,
happily knowing that I had learned
another lesson in basic car care.
It's not easy being a woman
today, you know. We're liberated
now and part' of that ideal includes
supposedly having a knowledge of-
cars. However, many of us still
only know how to put the ""car in
drive. and pull up to the gas pump.
This usually ends up in .comments
like, "You women can't do
anything," from exasperated
, males. '
We're learning though. But I just
pray I don't get a flat tire. -
Changing a tire will be another
story!

The three did have a tendency to
agree on some matters. All three
indicated they were opposed to
legalizing abortions.
Craig said he couldn't justify

Cardiff said he couldn't support

an abortion allowed because a couple

We've always believed Canada to be a resource rich
nation. But how long can we afford to continue selling off our
oil, our gas, our trees, our valuable ores to -the highest bidders
among the multinational corporations? a
... If you listen to the Liberals and Conservatives, the answer -
is: `orever.
.r Ed Broadbent and the NDP think that's insanity. There's
an oil crisis in the world and we're still pouring out oil to the
multinationals like it's water. What are we going to say to our
children when all our oil is gone?
In 1973, the NDP forced the Liberal government to set up
Petrocan so that Canada, would have a government agency to
deal with our energy needs. And just in time, too. Petrocan
should become our sole importer of crude and fuel oil. It can
negotiate directly with foreign governments for oil so we '
don't have -to deal through the multinationals. °
The Conservatives, on the other hand, want to get rid of
Petrocan.
There are solutions to our future energy needs. We•should
be completing cross country oil and gas lines and start
phasing out exports. We should step up the search for '
alternate energy sources and put more emphasis on energy
conservation.
We must start developing all our resources for the benefit
ofall,Canadians. When resources are exported, -we are also
exporting jobs. For every job in a resource industry there are
five and a half jobs in processing and manufacturing.,.
Developing secondary industry around the resources sector
could go a long way to solving Canada's unemployment
problem.
Canada needs some emffeetive management in the resource
sector while we still have the resources to manage. Ed
Broadbent and the NDP are determined to provide it.
