'citing "The Filler"
By Paul Hartman
As .• unpleasant as it is
inevitable we
- "professional" writers
must face up to the fact
that there just aren't
going to be ' enough fast
• breaking stories or
feature length articles to
fill a page.
In such a case our dear
-consde ra to -editor will
`.' ass i >. . some pod eiod
(me) to write an article
on the same night that
"the poor clod" has to
,write :.three : essays ands
study for two tests. Much -
howling, hollering,
pleading and imploring
does not even fizz on th
Stern faced editor as size
says, "It's your jolt,"
which is a polite, waY of
saying, "Do it or dier.
So seeing no way out of
having to write a filler, (a
small - or large: article
used to fill up space), "I
rush to a group of my
friends in the library and
demand, "Give ' me'' n
idea for an particle'':' •'
"Sex! Drugs! Rock and
Roll," were the im-
mediate responses.
Disgusting, Someone else
suggested that I write on
the crisis in Iran.
Someone suggested sex
again - and there were
peals of laughter. Some
friends I have! No one
cares anymore.
Seeing that I would get
no help from the
aforementioned friends I
wandered home to ponder
my poor lot in life,
•
I tried.to write' one of
the .essays but found my
mind wandering.
Studying for a test was no
easier because I kept
hearing the words, `Do it
- or die" over and over
'again in , my head.
