(photo by Wilma Oke) Auto insurance a must now Ontario's new Com- pulsory Automobile Insurance Act came into effect on December1 and requires that all motor vehicles registered on or after that date be covered by a minimum of $100,000 third party liability in- surance, consumer minister Frank Drea announced recently. Under the new legislation, Ontario drivers can no longer pay $150 into the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund and register a vehicle for use without insurance. Vehicle owners are required to verify . in writing that they have insurance before •registering a vehicle or renewing registration and obtaining 1980 licence plate stickers. Renewal stickers must be obtained before March 1, 1980. "The legislation reflects our view and the predominant public view that every motorist on the road mustbe financially responsible, said Drea, "and at the same time it guarantees that every motorist in. Ontario will have access .to insurance coverage." The legislation called for the `formation of an insurance industry pool Ter high-risk drivers, known as the Facility Association, that has been in operation since December 1. Mem- bership in the association is mandatory for all in- surers licensed to write" automobile insurance in Ontario, and rates created by the association will be subject to approval by the Superintendent of Insurance to ensure that high-risk drivers are treated as fairly as possible. "A num lief- of insurers have been designated to act on behalf of the association," said Drea. "Insurance agents who cannot place a high-risk applicant through the companies they normally represent, will be able to obtain coverage through one of these insurers." Agents who refuse to provide and process an application for insurance are subject to fines of up to $2,000. ` Insurers that refuse to provide coverage are liable to a maximum fine of $25,000. The Act also stipulates that as of March 1, 1980, all motor vehicle in- surance policies will provide uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage will pay claims to those insured under the contract, for personal injury resulting from accidents caused by uninsured or hit-and-run drivers. The coverage will also compensate for damage to the insured vehicle where the uninsured ,driver can be identified. "The Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund will remain in place to handle the few instances in which claims cannot -be resolved by an insurer," said Drea, "but in the vast majority of cases, claims will be paid by the driver's own insurance company. The owner of a vehicle, who drives without in- surance, provides false proof ofinsurance or permits another in- dividual to drive the uninsured vehicle will be liable to fines of $500 to $2500 possible suspension of his or her driver's licence ;for a period of up to one year, and possible impounding o f the vehicle for up to three months. Drivers Al also be required to carry the pink liability card issued by insurers when operating a motor vehicle. Failure to provide proof of in- surance when requested by a police officer could result in fines of up to.- $200. There will be na beer tent at the Kinsmen's 1980 Cornfest in Mitchell. The decisiiol carne after. the Kinsmen• decided that the operation didn't generate enough money ` and president Bill Eidt ad- mitted, "there have been problems." The decision to scrap the tent also came with a letter from the ,Liquor Licence Board of Ontario, which advised the club that it would be refused a licence for a beer tent for 1980. The board, however, noted that the Kinsmen shouldn't have any trouble getting liquor licences for other events. For the past two years the beer tent, held in connection with the annual Cornfest, has been a trouble spot. Several people have had to receive hospital attention as the result of brawls, extra police officers, including the OP? were hired to supervi a the tent 1tfockik'17"-iSN' fifiv4,41: 7e,,,k) May the endearing customs and pleasures of an old fashioned Christmas .decorate every moment .of your Yuletide.
