The Vanagtra Public School float won first prize in
In Goderich the Goderich Santa Clause Parade last Saturday,
and the students and staff were very proud of -their
Floats win in parade
Again this year,
Vanastra groups entered
floats in the Goderich
Santa Claus Parade held
on December 8.
The Vanastra Public
School entered,their float
that was called Some
Things Never Change and
featured Reindeer One
pulling Santa's sleigh.
The float look first prize -
in the school category.
The Cub, Scout,
Brownie and Guide float,
Christmas Camping on
the Moon in the year 2000
A.D. won second prize in
the youth category.
The Lions and Lioness
Club also had a float
entered into the service
club group and also took
second prize.

and Peter Robinson.

The C.G.I.T. girls
decided at their meeting
on Dec. 5 to go carolling
in Varna on Wednesday,
Dec. 19. Our meeting
opened with us repeating
the purpose. Then we
drew •names for
Christmas presents. The
•
theme for the worship
service was Warm
Fuzzies. For crafts we
made warm fuzzies and
banners. We also
discussed having a
Christmas party, .„
UCW
Over 30 UCW members
and their guests sat down
to a delicious pot -luck
supper last Thursday at
the church. We look
forward with pleasure
each year to this reunion
with former members.
Mrs. Belle Reid was
presented with a gift in
honour of her many years
of service in the Sunday
School and the women's
groups. Mrs. Sherlock
Keyes made the
presentation on behalf of
the members.

service relating the UCW
purpose of Christian
witness, study, fellowship

Christmas story was
presented by Margaret

passages.
A double duet of Helen
Taylor, Mona Stephen-
son, Mary Chessell and
Shirley Hill sang two
Christmas songs. Mary
Chessell told of Tom and
Mary Harpur's ex-
periences in the Holy
Land as related in his
. 'book "The Road to
Bethlehem --- 2000 years
later". Margaret
McClvmont read a poem
"Along the Bethlehem

was organist for the
service and for the
singing of carols after
supper.
Eleanor McAsh
presided for the business
meeting. Supper was to
be served to the Orange
Lodge on Tuesday, Dec.
'11, On Thursday, boxes
will be packed for shut-
ins of the area at Eleanor
McAsh's home, and gifts
for our adopted -residents
of Huronview will be
assembled by Joyce
Dowson.
Donations of $50 to
Family and Children's
Services and $20 each to
the C.G.I.T., the Youth
Group and Messengers
were approved. Members
were reminded of the
Sunday School Concert
next Sunday, December
16th at 2 p.m. It will
celebrate the Inter-
national Year of the
Child.

Teachers Shirley Hill,
Bonnie. Roy and Dianne
Kirton gave a presen-
tation, "Sharing the Gifts
of God". The children put
their gifts into the
Treasure Chest and then
sang. Baby Heather
Laurie represented God's
gift of the baby Jesus.
A special Candlelight
service will be held on
Christmas Sunday at the
church at 7:30 in the
evening.
The Youth Group had a
good response to their
first bottle drive on
Saturday. •
Round -up
The village ••of Varna
took on. a Western at-
mosphere last week when
there were several cattle
round -ups. Do you sup-
pose the mild, open
weather has given them
Spring Fever?
On Monday a 1200 -
pound steer got out while
Frank Voogel was
unloading at the stock
barn. Then on Thursday,
30 head of Don Brodie's
cattle got out about 4 a.m.
in the morning, Mr.
Postma notified the

Brodies that they were
out, and they were able to
get nine of them home
before daylight. The rest
of them were located
behind Bob Norman's
barn at Varna.
The Brodies were very
concerned that they
might cause an accident
or some da'mage, but they
were able to get them
home again without
mishap. A big steer of
Bob Norman's was also
on the loose. It was
thought at first to be one
of Don's ,herd until Bob.

- Coat a 10 inch pan with
vegetable spray. Place in
bottom of the pan in
layers:
2 cups whole cranberries
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/2 cup sugar , -
Mix together; and beat:
2 eggs
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
one-third stick
Cranberry Delight
margarine, melted
Pour this mixture over
the cranberries and
spread evenly. Melt
additional one-third stick
of margarine \ and pour
over the top. Bake at 325
degrees for 1 hour. This
pie fre je ez el isy well.Dessert
1 pkg. wild cherry Jello
1 pkg. grape Jello
To each add 1 cup hot
water and 1/2 cup cold
water. Place each in pan
to set. Cut j1/2" squares.
1 lemon Jello
1 cup hot water
1/4 cup granulated sugar
10 oz. tin crushed
pineapple
3 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup cold water
Combine. Let it start to
• set -and whip till fluffy.
Add 1/2 pt. whipped
cream. Fold in Jello
cubes and let stand.
Serve on lettuce leaf with
hot rolls.
Lioness Club meet
December 6 'was the
last meeting of 1979 for
the Vanastra and District
Lioness Club. This was a
dinner meeting and guest
speaker for the evening
was Murray Rohner, Lion
Zone Chairman for
District A-37. He gave an
interesting. talk on the
-Lion organization and the
good work that they do
for the blind and han-
dicapped.
Members are reminded
that we are to meet at the
Rec Centre on December
23 at 6:30 p.m...in order to
go Christmas caroling.
The next dinner meeting
will be Pot Luck and is to
be held on January 10
Team Sportsman
badges were handed out
to Kevin Smith, Bryan
Thomas, Allan Bonte-
Gelok, Robbie Brunault,
'Peter Robinson, Shannon
Mellor and Amal Unsal.
Many more badges
were handed out, which
proves the "boys are
working hard. The pack
is now working on the
Bronze Exploring Badge
and this should be
finished by the end of
January.
Teen dance
planned
The Vanastra and
District Lioness Club are
putting on a dance for the
teens on December 14 at
8:30 p.m. in the Vanastra
Rec Centre. The price is
$3.00 per person or $5.00 a
couple which will include
a meal. Music will be
records and tapes.
Brownies
have party
On Monday night, the
Brownies joined together
to have their Christmas
party. After the regular
opening, the girls made
gifts for their families,
and played games. They
enjoyed hamburgers and
treats, and as a special
part of the party, they
• exchanged gifts. The next
regular Brownie meeting
will be January 7, 1980.

olds.
On Friday, December
21, our boys and girls will
be dismissed at the same
time as Regular
classes will end for the
day, at 12:30. School
begins again at 9 a.m. on
Thursday, January 3,
1980.
