GL INTQN NEWS-RECORIat THURSDAY*,
1979:
Someone, this past
week, rims"s-".tyhave read my
threat to write "fors" and
againsts" - the following
came creeping across my
desk as an "Against".
Maybe other armchair -
quarterbacks feel much
the same.
Football statistics are
very much overdone on
TV broadcasts - such as
passes attempted -
completed, quarterback
sacks, (the kind you put
the cat in?) , third down
conversions (to a 1st?),
etc. etc. and now we have
the most important of
all??? The "hang time",
measuring the time the
ball is in the air from
leaving the kicker's toe
until it is touched by the
receiver or the ground.
Why all these are so
important when one team
does little statistically
and still wins the game.

BEAVERS SCOUTS
NEWS... by Mary Freeman
CUBS
I'm going to be a "Fireman" or "Policeman"
when I grow up. Familiar words from 5-7 year-
old boys and even more so following a visit to the
police station and firehall Wednesday night.
Fire Chief Clarence Neilans gave the Beavers
a tour of the firehall, stopping to point out dif-
ferent types of engines and where the hoses and
coats were dried. A special treat was allowing
the boys to sit on the engines, a privilege which
will not soon be forgotten.
Our next stop was the police station and for the
first time there were 24 Beavers in the holding
cell. Constable McFadden took the time to
fingerprint each boy, explained wanted posters
and displayed different types of guns. Following
a` brief question and answer period, the Beavers
got an inside look at the cruiser complete with
flashing lights.
Constable McFadden and Chief Neilans made
the evening very special for the Beavers and for
this we say a great big Beaver "Thank You".
Cubs:
Growing a plant from a seed, a crystal, a
chemical garden or planting a shrub and taking
care of it for a reason are just a few of the Black
' Star requirements and what better place to get
information than from an expert. Iden Cooke, of
K. C. Cooke Florist, gave ten Cubs, who visited
the florist shop Thursday, a very interesting and
informative evening at the greenhouse. Raksha
and • the black star group "thank -you" Mr! Cooke.
Jeoff Lyon and Matthew Kerrigan have
fulfilled all the requirements for swimming and
were presented with their swimmers badge.
Bob Snell has taken the leader's position this
year as "Bagheera". Bob is employed by Bendix
in Hensall and enjoys trapping, hunting and
baseball. He is -married with two boys Jeremy 6
and Shawn 5, also two Beaver colony members.
Scouts '
The Scouts began their meeting with films on
winter shelter building and cross.country skiing.
This is part of the winter Scouting program being
emphasized this year.
Scoutmaster Wayne. Wigglesworth formally
invested Rodney Freeman into the Scopt Troup
with' the Scout investiture ceremoify. After
repeating his promise, Rodney was kresented
with his scarf and then received special badges
from Scouter Bob and Scouter Barry.
Congratulations and good Scouting Rodney. •
Several Scouts were presented with challenge
and achievement badges and most notableof
these was presented to . Rick Becker. Rick
received the Gold Life Saving Badge, a
qualifying badge toward the chief Scouts award
by successfully completing the Bronze medallion
course offered by the Royal Canadian Life
Saving Society. Rick should feel very proud as
this is not an easy award to obtain.
Congratulations from the Beavers, Cubs . and
Scouts..

Child care
maybe hurt
WINGHAM - The quality
of child care at the
Wingham and District
Hospital has been
reduced as a result of bed
shuffling which sent the
children's ward to the
second floor,-, some
members of the hospital
board feel.
As a result the hospital
will call in a consultant
from the provincial
health ministry to decide
:whether the present
location is acceptable.
Mary Vair, president of
the hospital auxiliary,
objected to the move,
saying that she had been
approached by up to 60
mothers and hospital
workers Lwho are upset
about the situation. She
noted that the noise of a
sick child crying all night
can be upsetting to other
patients and pointed out
that, while other patients
have • facilities available
for relaxation and
therapy, there is no
longer any play area for
the children.
Another board member
asked why the board had
not been consulted about
the move.
Hospital director
Norman Hayes said that
the board wasn't told
about the move because it
was an operational
decision. He did offer to'
call in the, senior nursing
consultant from- the
health ministry to review
- the situation.
Mr. Hayes noted that
the nursing staff had been
co' stilted, althoug he
ad fitted the nu sing
staff disagreed wit i the
relocation and wanted to
keep the ward on the first
floor,
:para
has faced this by
changing boundaries in
tratford and triple
grades in some schools.
He said staffing was a
concern with the 19
schools in the system
overstaffed according to
the board's ` formula. In
1980 he said he is hopeful
of getting the staff , to
what it should be.
in Kingsbridge i? -
tegrated transportatich
has been' working out
satisfactorily and saving
the board money, he said,
and he hoped this could
be continued in other
4
areas.
He said the primary
thing is to think of the
children and aim to
provide the best
education for them.
Murray said, "If I'm
needed, I'll be here."
Rev. Tony Sonderup,
e Brd
Wingham, Dean of
Stratford Deanery, asked
the board how to get more
enrolment
"Have we gotten into
the habit of - thinking
'small is beautiful'?", he
asked. Can we not think
more positively and think
of larger families?,
In other business the
board passed a b.orrc ;wing
by-law. of $3 million to be
used to carry on board
business until current
revenue has been
received. This is up a half
million dollars over last
year. •
A -nominating com-
mittee of the board
chairman, vice-
chairman, director of
education, and John
O'Leary was named to
select the board com-
mittee.
