Educational Notes.
The following items are culled from the
annual report of the Minister of Education :
Tt allows that the total number el „register-
ed pupile in the Public schools. 1886 was
487,496, of whom 257,030 were boys and
230,466 girls.
The total number registered in 1885 was
472,459 ; in 1884. 466,917 ; 1883, 464,-
369 ; in 1882, 471,512 ; in 1881, 476,268 ;
in. 1880. 483,045 ; in 1879, 487,102 ; in 1878
489,015 ; in 1877, 490,860 ; in 1876, 490,537.
It will be noticed that the number of pu-
pils registered in 1876 is 3,051 in excess of
the number registered in 1886, but the num-
ber registered in 1886 was the largest since
1878. The school age was increased from 16
to 21. last year.
The average attendance, however, was
larger than ever before. being 239,044, or 49
per cent. of the total number of pupils regis-
tered.
The Minister then points out that the
powers conferred on trustees to compel the
attendance at sohool of children between
seven and thirteee. years of age for a period
of at. least 100 days each year are mot exer-
cised, and he regrets that the necessity for
their excercise is on the increase.
There were 7,631 teachers, of whom 2,727
are male, 4,637 female, 251 with first-class
certificates, 2,465 with second-class, 3,077
with third class, and 971. teaching on Old
Country Board or other certiacates.
There is a steady decrease in the number
of male teachers. In 1881 there were 3,677,
over 600 more than at present. During the
same period the number of female teachers
has increased by over a thousand.
The nuinber of Separate schools has in-
creased 57 in. eleven years, the expenditure
has increased $78,237, and the number of
teachers 159 during the same period.
There are now 5,451 school houses ie he
Province, of which 5,437 open in 1336.
