on many of their friends.

Apple Day.
UCW meets
The November meeting
of the UCW was" held
Thursday evening.
Marjorie Stirling gave
the introduction to the
study of Japan, telling
how heavy industry is
now replacing the textile
industry, and with a
population of 114 million
people, they have many
problems, especially the
problem of pollution.
Less than one percent of
the people are Christian,
but that is nearly double
the number there were 20
years ago.
Rev. Wilena Brown
showed many pictures of
Japan taken when she
attended the Inter-
national Convention on
Christian Education 21
years ago. It was held in
the International
Christian University in
Tokyo. One picture
showed the western in-
fluence in church design,
another the more open,
well -ventilated design
they usually build.
Little paint is used in
Japan, as .the hi h
humidity causes paint to
peel quickly. This gives
the cities a drab ap-
pearance
ppearance,which is
relieved only by their
beautiful parks and
gardens.
They visited the Palace
Grounds,, and were en-
tertained at parties given
at the Canadian Embassy
and by the Governor of
Tokyo. The private
gardens are- very
beautiful, and are
designed as places of
quiet and meditation.
vMiss Brown visited
several Japanese cities
including Hiroshima,
where they hadrebuilt
the city, and brought in
good soil to grow
shrubbery and grass. It
was hard to believe that
an area so devastated by
the A-bomb could have
recovered so w_gll within
a few years, but it was an
important military base
with a large harbour.
There was an interesting
display of souvenirs for
everyone to examine.
The theme of the
devotions was "The
Greatness of God". A
filmstrip "In the
Beginning" illustrated
various scripture verses,
and was interspersed
with hymns of praise.,
Joyce Dovison, Marj`
Stirling and Elva Web-
ster were in charge of
program and lunch.
Dorothy Ostrom
reported that envelope
givings were away down
from last year, so we are
hoping for a good offering
in December, or before
the end of the -year. Mary
Chessell reported for the
nominating committee
that last year's excellent
executive is remaining in
office for another year.
with the exception of the
secretary, Shirley Hill,
who has held thatoffice
for three years. Dianne
Kirton will be the new
secretary.
Bonnie Roy and Dianne
Kirton have taken the
Department of
Agriculture's Indoor
Gardening course, and
will give instruction to all
interested people early hi
the new year.
The annual potluck
supper and Christmas
meeting will be heli on
Dec. 7 with all former
members of the group,
and an open house at the`
Manse is planned for the
afternoon and evening of
Sunday, Nov. 18,
