Bayfield and the Scott Act.
A considerable number of the people of
Bayfield seem to labor under the delusion that
they are superior to the law, and by their
Dino defiance of the Scott Act, and organized
opposition to any attempt at its enforcement,
are not only disgracing their village, but
bringing about a state of affairs which no
government can tolerate. The attack on two
constables a few weeks ago while undertaking
to serve summonses, as previously narrated,
was an instance of this, and the statements
the published seem not to have been over-
drawn judging by tue experience of High
constable McKay, and constables Yule and
Dan McIver, in their attempte to arrest three
of the leaders in that outrage, for whom
warrants had been issued by Pollee Magis-

Ontario Fuel,.
To the Editor of the Exeter Tibee.
Sir.—I noticed lately the acoompanying
which does not refer tu the late windstorms
in the west, but to about two weeks before
them. It is noticed that reuses is in the
same position which °uteri° will ocieupy if
her firesvood be exhausted, namely, there are
great forest near Kansas, as there will be
still in the nerthern parts of Ontario, but
they are too distant to allow of the:Ica:mum'
of wood at any moderate rate. We !lave on
an average, in the older settled parts of
Ontario, only fifteen years firewood at the
present rate of use :—
SCARCITT OF FIIEL, IN KINFIAB.
There was last week great suffering in
Kansas for want of fuel Much of that state
is treeless, and wood is not to be had. Corn
is sometitnes used there for fuel but tbe crop
was a failure this year, and the unfortunate
settlers were deprived of that resource
against the inclemeney of the whiter weather
In some countries the inhabitants had
nothing to depend upon but re scanty aucl
uncertain supply of coal. Some of them had
to travel tnirty, forty and fifty miles to a'
railway station for coal, only to;find" that
there was none to be hed. The roads were
worked to their utmost capacity, yet they
could not support all who need fuel, in one
place tlae ears were stopped by the citizens,
who were ready to perish, and they helped
themselves tu wiaat they wanted. Many
persons have been frozen to death, and many
who have not actually perished with eold
have endured greet suffering.—Montreal
Star.
What this should suggest to ns ia the
propriety of encoaraging, by every means,
the planting of suftioient portions of each
farm, if possible, to provide a future reserve
for that farm. There are, besides, many
portions of land now utterly waste, or giving
but a very scant pasture to ono or two ani.
male which would be much batter in trees.
It could with care be got into forests again.
It is time now to attend to tbase matters for
when the injury is done it will be, in this
matter. too late to remedy it without great
loss. It is while we yet nave trees we should
plant some,

On Monday morning the wife of Mr.

mit suicide by shooting herself with a

inflicting a deep wound in one lung
that proved fatal. It appears that Mrs.

was aonsidered slight mental disorder
for some time past.
Mr. George Patterson, of St. Helens,
met with a very painful accident while
chopping in Mr Deavereaux's swamp.
It appears that George had felled a tree
it becoming bound between two others,
and he mounted it to put another cut
into it. A soon as he stuck the axe in-
to it the axe stuck fast, and the part on
which he web standing gave way throw-
ing him upon the axe and nearly sever-
ing the small finger of Ilia left hancl.
