FOR MAXIMUM ENERGY SAVINGS, aluminum residing
panels should be installed over a sandwich of insulation consist-
ing of two layers of reflective foil, foam backer board and an air
space between the old and new siding provided by 3/4' furring

Insulate when re -siding your home
If re -siding is in your old
home's future, gd a step further
and consider insulated siding.
In addition to giving the
house a facelift and reducing
maintenance, it will help cut the
amount of fuel you use.
Increasingly popular,as en-
ergy supplies decrease and heat-
ing costs increase, insulated
aluminum siding on a home
with uninsulated walls can re-
duce fuel requirements. Insula-
tion comes in a variety of types,
each with its own degree of effi-
ciency; and to secure the best
value for the money, you should
know what is available and what
each will accomplish.

The heat pump principle may
be pew_to many consiimers.
eVen,tkiough it's not new in the.
heating and air conditioning in-,
dustry.7Basically. it is a central
air conditioning system that can
both heat and cool.
jn summer itextracts heat
from the air inside a home and
pumps it to the outside and, in
winter, extracts heatfrom the
outside air; raises the tempera-
ture. and distributes it inside the
house.
•
The heat pump isn't magic, .
but it has the capability to pull
enough heat •trom.the outdoor
air during much of 'the heating
season to keep the indoor air
comfiertable. This is possible
• , becauseeven at cooler tempera-
tures. there is still heat in the
outdoorair-----and the heat pump
takes advantage of that heat.
Homeowners with existing
electric furnaces may also bene-
fit by adding a heat pump to
their system, They can save •
- considerably, when compared
with forced -air electric resist-
ance heating costs. Actual sav-
ings vary, of course, according
,to whc.'.re,and how you,live.
Pre -finished aluminum sid-
ing usually repays its initial cost
by eliminating the need for per-
iodic painting. However, insu-
lated siding cuts the cost still
further because of fuel savings.
"R" values
The effectiveness of insula-
tion materials is measured in
"R" values—numbers indica-
ting how much resistance the in-
sulation gives to heat flowing
through it. The higher the num-
ber the better the insulation
properties.
Aluminum siding, along with
vinyl plastic. steel or hard-
board, offers no real insulation
on its own.
But a system composed of
aluminum siding over a sand-
wich of insulation consisting of
foam plastic board, two layers
of reflector foil and an air space
provided by 3/4 -in. furring
strips hasi,a 5.6-6.0 value.
• Using this type insulation.
the owner of a house with a wall
area of 2000 square feet in Bos-
ton, Mass., using heating oil at
70ct a gallon, could save as
much as $280 a year.
In Denver, Colo., that figure
could reach over $300 and', in
Milwaukee, Wisc., as much as
$375. Savings would be more
for the family heating with elec-
tricity and somewhat less with
gas.
Another type is aluminum
siding over an extruded poly-
styrene or polyisocyanurate in-
sulation board, having a 4,7-5 R
value,
A hollow -backed aluminum
siding with a polystyrene backer
provides a 2.5-3.0 R value, and
aluminum siding with foil alone
has an R value of 1.1.
Expert advice
How siding is installed can be
as important as the material cho-
sen. For thc most effective re-
sults, the aluminum siding ex-
perts advise incorporating air
spaces into the new wall system
because dead air' -'acts as an effi-
cient insulator,
For instance, if the contractor
adds furring strips to separate
two layers of aluminum foil,
along with an insulating backer
• board, to the original surface of
your house, you'll have the
maximum protection provided
by three air spaces—one be-
tween the foil and the old siding;
the second between the two lay-
ers of foil; and the third between
the foil and the new siding.

nurn siding you choose, be sure
the contractor does a good
caulking job around windows
and doors,to ensure air tight-
ness. This should be done be-
fore trim and accessories are
added to the siding.
Be sure he shows you the
wide variety of new colors and
textures available in aluminum
siding, along with the selection
of matching or contrasting alu-
minum trim and the various
panel styles.
Choose your contractor care-
fully, because it is his expertise
that will give you the best job
for the money you invest.

Protect Your Insulation
and Live More
Comfortably'
Because we tend to over humidify our ,
homes in winter, this air seeps into the attic
area. When it does, it condenses on the
cold inner roof and attic rafters. This
moisture freezes and then melts on the first
, warm day. The result: your soaked
insulation is compressed by condensed
• Water and you lose the insulation protection
you paid for. With a humidistat equipped
power Ventilation system set at 85%, the
moisture laden air is exhausted from your
attic immediately.
SAVE ENERGY!
Bonus: Power ventilators are
equipped with thermostats at
no extra charge. The ther-
niostat will actuate the fan to
eliminate summer heat and
provide economical home
