Survey results revealed
On Monday Oct. 15, a
meeting was heir; for the
residents and
businessmen of Vanastra
to learn the results of a
survey done by the
Vanastra Resource
Centre, who were 'given a
grant by the Secretary of
State,'s office to do .a
survey to develop
community spirit and
awareness in Vanastra.
The survey was done by
Mrs. Nancy Anstett 4 who
started this project in
April 1979. She sent
questionnaires out to a
cross-section of
Vanastra, parents of
children who attend
Vanastra public school,
grades 4,- 5 and 6, teens
and 30 residents of
Vanastra.
She also interviewed
most of the businessmen,
the Township Clerk and
the Principal of the
school.
Results of this survey
showed that there was a
great variance in oc-
cupations. It also showed
that 83.32 percent of the
residents of Vanastra
have lived here for 4 to 7
years. When answering
the question if they were
happy living in Vanastra
63.83 percent said they
were.
In interviews with
Vanastra's businessmen,
it was found that 11 were
happyhaving their
businesses in Vanastra
and are planning to stay
here permanently.
Hank Bonte-
chairman for the
evening, read the ideas
that were put forward at
the meeting, at which the
survey results were
presented to the service
clubs of Vanastra. He
pointed out that most
groups' ideas were to do
something with the
townhouses, the .red brick
school house and to bring
more industry , into.
Vanastra. He also said
that more positive press
would help the com-
munity.
Everyone ,,,present at
the meeting felt that
these were good. aims. An
idea was put forward that
'someone look into a trade
school for the red brick
building. In connection
with this, they also felt
That the townhouses could
be used as housing for the
students. .

businessmen felt that the
community and
businesses could work
closer together for the,
betterment of the corn
rnunity.-
• The' survey also showed
that both groups felt that
we do not require more
clubs in Vanastra.
Some representatives
from Tuckersmith
Township council were
present at the meeting,
and the press was also
there.
One of our businessmen
stated that he felt the new
clerk has done a lot for
improving relations
between Vanastra and
council. Everyone was in
agreement with this.
It was put forward that....
we show the results of the
survey to the ratepayers
of Tuckersmith township
and the service clubs in
Clinton. This would
possibly go towards
improving our image,
and help us to work closer
with Clinton and the
township.
It was drawn to our
attention that there is
$1,200 of the grant left. It
was requested that we
ask our residents to
submit ideas on what
should be done with this
money. It should be spec t
in •a way that will im-
prove community spirit
and awareness.
A definition of this
community spirit is the
feeling of participants
that they belong to a
group which has
distinctive values and the
capacity to act on these
values. Awareness refers
to knowing what is going
on in the community.
So if anyone has any
ideas on how this money
could be spent to further
the aim of this grant,
please submit your ideas
to the Vanastra Resource
Centre before Nov. 1.
These ideas will then be
given to the Secretary of
State's office for their
approval.

the program can work
effectively to provide the
utmost in protection. A
Block Parent program, to
some extent, reduces the
crime rate in a com-
munity and makes our
children more aware of
porissible dangers around
them. ' Being. a Block
Parent requires very
little time and effort and
you need not , have
children 'to apply. Sorge
of the best Block Parents
are in the middle-aged to
elderly age group with no
children.
In the past few months,
it has become in-
creasingly evident that a
strong community spirit
thrives here, and I'm
proud to belong to such a
community that really
cares about its growth
and its people.
Remember that a Block
Parent program can play
a key role in this growth.
A community with Block
Parent signs displayed in
the windows proves tat
it does care. think 3y
now, people are familiar
with the program and
how it functions.
However, if you're not
farnilikr with it and
,require more in-
formation, or wish to
become a Block Parent,
please contact me by
phoning 482-7757.
In the meantime, fpr
those already acquainted
with the program, I'd
appreciate your help in
encouraging your friends
and neighbours to learn a
bit more about it and
hopefully become Block
Parents. One final note;
The safety and welfare of
our,children is the
rfesponsibility of all.
