Former editor
dies suddenly
MITCHELL - Wanda
Mounteer, the longtime
dedicated publisher and
editor of The Mitchell
Advocate died suddenly
on September 2$. She was
80 years old.
Mrs. Mounteer's name
has long been associated
with newspaper work in
Mitchell. In 1933. she and
her husband Gordon
came from a newspaper
in Trenton and published
the Advocate. After her
husband's death in 1941,
Mrs. Mounteer continued
to anchor the weekly
paper until 1976, when
Signal -Star Publications
purchased it. After that,
Mrs. Mounteer remained
on staff at the Advocate
until she retired in
August 1978 at the age of
79.
Until the Signal's
purchase of the
newspaper, Mrs.
Mounteer published The
Advocate for 37 years, by
herself. In busier periods,
she worked seven days a
week and even had a cot
in the rear of the building
for nights when she never
made it home.
She was a dedicated
worker and defensive of
her town's reputation.
She was slow to condemn
and quick to forgive and
never believed "bad
news" deserved wide
play on the pages of her

newspaper.
Mrs. Mounteer did not
see her job as a great act
of heroism. As far as she
could see, the job had to
be done and no one else
was stepping up to do it.
When asked why she
stayed with the job for so
long Mrs. Mounteer once
replied, "Really, what
else could I have done?"
Interment was in Clinton
cemetery.
Pallbearers were Doug
Farquhar, Ray Finch,
John Flynn, Stephen,
Flynn, Arnold Dale, and
