Recently we received a
press release from the
Canadian Government
Office of Tourism en-
titled, What Urban
Canadians think about
vacationing in Canada.
The survey, carried out
by the Contemporary
Research Centre Ltd. for
,.the Office of Tourism,
was answered by 500
respondents in each of six
metropolitan centres
located near the U.S.-
Canada border (Van-
couver, Calgary, Win-
nipeg, Toronto, English
and French Montreal,
and Halifax.)
British Columbia was
rated as the number one
travel destination by
each group with the
exception of French
Montreal, which chose
Quebec. The U.S. was
second choice as a
destination in Vancouver,
V innipeg and English
Montreal; third' in
Calgary and French
Montreal; and fourth in
Halifax.
When asked to compare
accommodations in the
two , countries,, the
respondents indicated
that the United States
offered a wider variety of
hotels and motels, and
felt they got better value
for their money south of
the border.
Canadian cities have
the image of being safe to
walk around in, and for
this reason were rated
above American cities as
tourist destinations.
Canada also scored.
higher than the U,$. in
ha iig good restaurants
and\ in being a place to
explore the countryside
and talk to the lOcal
= people.
Qn the other hand, the
U.S. rated higher than
Canada as being\,a place
to go shopping and to visit
,beaches and art galleries;,\
as .well as having a more
exciting nightlife. .
But Canada is still seen
as the place to go to get
away from ft all, and as a
place worth a repeat
visit. The ease of getting
travel information before
leaving on ,a trip also
made Canada more
appealing to many
travellers.
