St. Marys to
pay for
planning
St. Marys is going to
have to pay more money
to the Perth County
planning department for
the use of its services.
The St. Marys Journal -
Argus reported that the
decision to increase the
charges was made at a
recent county council
meeting.
Under a previous
agr:eelnent, St. Marys
paid the cost of using the
country's planning
servites-plus 50 per cent.
Now the town will be
required to pay the costs,
plus 100 per cent.
One reason why the
county has been asked to
act op ,behalf of the town
is because the county
planning director knows
the area well. The town
,galso felt that they
couldn't afford to have a
planning consultant on a
retainer basis since his
services may only be
occasionally needed.
Fake marsh
f•
for Listowel
Listowel has found an
answer to combat the
problem of an overloaded
sewage system. ,
, The Listowel 13aniler
reported that the
ministry of the en-
vironment " recently
announced that an ar-
tificial marsh will be
constructed in the town to
treat part of the com-
munity's effluent.
The-- experimental
project is estimated to
cost $480,000 and will be
funded by the ministry
and the Provincial
Lottery Corporation. The
marsh , will be ad-
ministered by the
ministry ' on an ex-
perimental basis over a
three-year period.
The marsh, to cover 2.5
acres of land adjacent to
the town's sewage
lagoon, will be composed
of primarily cattail
plants and will.operate on
a process that uses
natural purification. If
the concept is successful
in Listowel, the artificial
marsh could be used in
other fiarts of Ontario to
treat effluent, without
having t6 build and
expensive treatment
plants.
