September always
seems like "back to"
time - back to school,
college or university,
back to regular meal and
bedtimes, back to in-
creasingly darker
mornings and a nip in the
air - and how could we
forget, for the football
buffs - back to TV foot-
ball.

Our Pipe Band arrived
back home safe and
sound this week and from
all reports, they had an
extrer1S. busy schedule
of performances and a
very pleasant holiday in
bonny Scotland.
In most cases however,
they were glad to be
home again in" our
"young" Canada which
has more \to offer its
populous than most
countries of our world
here on earth.
The Massed Band was
well received at all its
appearances in ten major
centres in Scotland. Our
Clinton Pipe and Drum
Band, under the super-
vision of Pipe Major Len
McGregor, Drum Major
Jim Kennedy, and Color
Sgt. Ivan Hoggart were
presented with many
plaques and certificates
by the many towns and
cities in which they
performed. A hearty
welcome back home to
our band and color party
as well as the many
Sunday, when attendance
certificates will be
presented. Anniversary
services are a week from
Sunday, Sept. 16, and
Rev. Wilena Brown, our
new minister, will be the
speaker.
Residents of Varna who
missed the parade at the
Bayfield Fair on
Saturday were treated to
a local parade that
evening, when all the
parade entrants from the
village donned their
costumes again, and on
their decorated bicycles
and tricycles, paraded
around the streets of'
Varna. Several other
children decorated their
bikes and joined in the
fun.

Buslike tomatoes
The garden patch or
farmers' field are targets
of an unpopular insect -
sap beetles. These small,
dark beetles are at-
tracted to the odor of
fermenting juice from
blemished tomatoes and
corn.
Sometimes called
picnic beetles, they can
be identified by two
yellow spots on each wing
cover. They damage
tomatoes by boring into
the fruit through, cracked
and bruised areas, says
Professor H.W. Goble,
advisor to the Pest
Diagnostic and Advisory
Clinic, University of
Guelph. The clinic,
supported by the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, receives many
inquiries about the pesky
sap beetle.
Sweet corn is also
susceptible to invasion if -
corn borer, earworm or
bird damage exposes the
kernels. When plentiful,
sap beetles can enter the
cob through the silk.
"Control depends on
harvesting practices,
particularly in the case of
tomatoes," says
Professor . Goble.
"Remove cracked. and
,squashed, tomatoes from t
the field tc , discourage
heavy infestation. Sap
beetles won't feed on
healthy tomatoes." .
With proper chemical
control, sweet corn can
be protected from corn
borer and earworm
damage, and thus beetle
invasion. Professsor Goble
advises using seven spray
according to the
manufacturer's direc-
tions.
Bird damage is more,
difficult to control, but a
homemade scarecrow
offers some protection in
the home garden.
