The; thought of what my reception. would

journey pass in pleasant reveries, but for
the last hall hour the dawning sense of per -

bound the latter tightly around the horse's

to my remark, but remained completely
wrapt up in that silence which they had,
maintained while their fellow -companion,
had been speaking. He, at the first word I
had uttered, had buried his head in his
hands and seemed to me to be entirely un-
cosnoious of my existence.
I was slightly bored, and after a moment
said :
No offence was meant, gentlemen, I
assure you. I won't disturb your'conver-
sation again," and relapsed into a dignified
silence.
I gazed into the fire, mentally turning
over the rather strange conduct. of the travel-
ers, and now, as I watched the flaming logs,.
I noticed that they were very #.ew in num-
ber, but gave out a light equal to double the
quantity. The chimney, too, seemed: to be:
in a frightfully poor condition, the bricks
seeming to merely cling to each other by
small strips of mortar, and large holes ap-
peared. In spite of the fire, a sudden chill
took possession of my limbs, and I buttoned
my great coat around me and drew.' nearer
the fire again.

" I was harsh with my darlings," he inentallysaid,

But of course they've fbrgottentheir troubles ere
this,
And that I denied them the thrice asked for kiss ;
But, just to make sure, I'll steal up to their door,
For I never epoke harsh to my darlings before."'
So saying, he softly ascended the stairs,
And arrived'' at ;the door to bear both of their
prayers, •
His Annie's "bless papa" draws forth the big tears,
And Willie's ,*rave promise falls sweet on his ears;
" Strange, strange I d.forgotten," said he, with a
sigh,
"How I longed, when a child, to have Christmas

atone for my' harshness," he inwardly said,
" By answering their prayers ere I sleep in my bed."
still by its own position and steady burn-
ing it evidently belonged to a house of some
description. I pressed forward as rapidly
as possible, and then apnroaohednear enough
to recognize the place from which the light
came. It burned in the broad window of
an old, and rather dilapidated building.
which had been at one time an inn, but
which had finally become in such a rickety
condition that one night, many years ago, a
portion of it had collapsed and had buried
and killed beneath its fallen timbers, a party
of travellers and the landlord, into whose
unlucky possession. £he place had fallen.
Since then it had been unoccupied, as I
thought, until now, it loomed rap in the dark-
ness before me, built. up into its former con-
dition, and evidently once more in the hands
of a genial host.
Loading the livery stable man at B -,
who had informed me that I would find no
tavern between B—and W—, with
mental blessinggs, I made my way to the
door and' knocked for admission. The door
evidently opened into the hall or bar of the
inn, which was located in the rebuilt
}?ortion. For through a crack I saw a large
lire burning brightly. I knocked again,
and once more being taken no notice of,
opened the door and entered. The room
into which I passed was a large and spacious
Then he turned to the stairs and softly went down,
Throw off velvet slippers and silk dreseing gown,
Donned hat, coat and boots and went out on the
street,
A millionnaire facing nevoid, driving sleet,
Nor stopped he until he had bought everything,
To the box tun of candy, to the tiny gold ring,
Indeed t

That the various presents outnumbered a score
Then homeward he turned with his holiday lead,
And with Aunt Mary's help in the nursery 'twee
stowed. `
Mise Dolly was seated beneath a pine tree,
By the side of a table set out for hor tea ;
A workbox, well filled, in the centre was laid,
And on it the ring for which Annie had prayed.
A soldier In uniform stood by a sled,
" With bright shining runners and all painted red ;'
There were balls, dogs and horses, books pleasing to
see,
And birds of all colors were perched in the tree,
While Santa Claus, laughing, stood up in the top,
As if getting ready more presents to drop.
And as the fond Lather the picture surveyed,
He thought for his trouble he had amply been paid,
And he said to himself, as he brushed oe a tear,
"I'm happier tonight than rve been for a year;
I've enjoyed more true pleasure than over before,
What care I if bank stook fall ten per cent. more
Hereafter I71 make it a rule, I believe,
To have Santa Claus visit each Christmas Eve."
So thinking, he gently extinguished the light,
And tripped down the stairs to retire for the night
I must—"
I said no more. He raised his head, and
I saw a face that no man ever saw before,
and that -great God CIt was the faro of a
deed man. I realized it now, the face of
a ghastly corpse.
With a sliriek, so dreadful that it rung
my soul, I sprang to my feet, and at the
same time felt the building swaying to and
fro ; a roar, a mighty crash, and as a sicken-
ing pain darted -through me, the walls, the
ceiling, the whole room closed over me, and
I knew no more.

As soon as the beams of the bright rising sun
Put the darkness in flight and the stare, one by one,
Four little blue eyes out of sleep opened wide,
And at the same moment the presents espied,
Then out of their beds they sprang with a bound,
And the very gifts prayed for were all of them hound.
They laughed and they oried in their innocent glee,
And shouted for :papa" to come quick and see
What preents Old Santr Claus brought in the night
(Just the things what they wanted), and left before
light.
And now," added Annie in voice soft and low,
" You'II believe there's a 'Santa,Olaue; papa, I know;
While dear little Willie climbed up on his knee,
Determined between then no secret should be,
And told, in soft whispers, bow Annie had said
That their dear, blessed mamma, so long ago dead,
Used to kneel down and pray by the side of heroism;
And that God, up in IIearen, had answeredher
prayer.
"Ah, Sam, so you've been in trouble,
have you 7" " Yes, Jem, yea." " Well,
well, cheer up man ; adversity tries us and
shows up our better qualities." "Ah, but
adversity didn't try rime ; it was a judge, and
he sent me up for six mouths."
