Kurtz of Dow Street and Mr. and Mrs. Don Lance of Main Street were co - hosts to the annual Bayfield Weekend of The Book Club. Their visitors were Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Potter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dyer, and Mr. and Mrs. George Ross of Royal Oak, Michigan, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haapa of Pleasant Ridge, Michigan. Special guests on Saturday were former members of the group, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bennington of Florida, who were spending the month of :August in the North. This was the 20th year that this group of friends has spent a weekend together in Bayfield. Dr. Wm. Evening ride ends at a surprise shower When Karen Fitz- simons was asked to take a ride through the countryside on Sunday afternoon, to her sur- -prise she found herself in the small hamlet of St. Augustine at the former Roman Catholic school where she was greeted by friends, neighbours and relatives from Bayfield, Palmerston, Goderich, Dorchester, Brussels, Hensall, Rodney and London. The witty good -wishes address was composed and read by Mrs. William Parker of Bayfield who had taught Karen in school and Sunday School, after 'which Karen opened some 40 gifts, assisted ley° Tyler Brady and Laura Smale: .upon completion of the gift opening Karen thanked her friends. A salad smorgasbord supper was served to the guests by Mrs. • Elsie Johnston and Mrs. Fran Brady. • Of interest to the -guests at the affair was the fact that they were in the school once attended by Harry J. Boyle, author of 'Mostly in Clover', 'Home Brew and Patches', 'The Luck of the Irish' and other works. Mr. Boyle has been prominent in CBC Radio and Television program planning for many years., The school was. pur-, chased and converted into a residence by Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Johnston of Bayfield a few years._ago. Ball news The softball and T -ball games for Bayfield youth are off to a good start, softball in the Agricultural Park and T - ball in Clan Gregor Square. They will take place every Tuesday and Friday during August at 2 p.m., except for this Tuesday when they won't start until after the Puppet Show at the Town Hall. We still need a few" more players and helpers. Also, many more fans will be welcome. Pat Wachhaus, a summer visitor from Kingsville is in charge of the T -ball for ages six to ten, and Joyce Chilton, the softball for ages eleven to sixteen years. Lots of fun! The president, Dr. Walter Thompson expressed the gratitude of the Association to the convener Rosemary Crosthwaite and her committee for making it such a great success. The sale is the main source of income for park maintenance and to carry on the struggle to build a beach below by the use of gabions. Expenses in- cluded $2,280 for gabion construction, a donation to the arena fund of $1,000 and maintenance totalled $4,005,08,. Investments now amount to $5,000. A reduction of $1,500 was necessary to meet ex- penses last year. The members considered ways or . - increasing needed income. The meeting passed two resolutions regarding water -front lots owned by Pioneer -Park. There will be no charge at these performances. ersons meet BY MARY CHESSELL Eighty-two members of the Jefferson family gathered in the Con- servation Park at Clinton on Sunday for a reunion. The last reunion was held in 1967 at the home of Gordon and Eva .Laing of Cromarty. The weather was perfect, and the children had a great time in the playground. Quite a number of people hiked around the fitness trail. Olive Riehl and Barb Jefferson conducted a few games and races for the children, and awarded prizes to the adults for the following: closest guess of the number of buttons in the jar was Helen Dick of Thornhill; oldest man present was 85 -year-old Gordon Jeffer, son of Owen Sound; oldest lady was Gladys Jefferson of ,Goderich, who will be 87 on Saturday; Gordon and Hazel Jefferson were also the longest -married co{iple at 52 years, and the couple with an an- niversary closest to the reunion date; Doug and Turn to page 11 Lois Lance presented the report of her coin- xnittee regarding the erection of a plaque in the park in memory of Lucy Woods Diehl and asked for a definite decision on the matter, so that the plaque could be ordered and plans made for the unveiling ceremony to take place on the' Thanksgiving weekend this year.
