Truscott's
father dies
Daniel Truscott, 62,
father of the 14 -year-old
boy whose trial for
murder in 1959 caused
long controversy in
Canada, died of cancer
Sunday in Ottawa.
• A relative said Steven,
convicted of raping and
murdering 12 -year-old
Lynne Harper near
-CIfihton, visited his father
in Ottawa hospital about
two weeks ago. -
Truscott and his wife,
Doris, struggled in ' the
courts for seven years to
prove their son . was in-
nocent, but in - 1966 the
supreme court of Canada
upheld the conviction. -
The Truscotts carried
on the crusade for two
more years, writing to
MPs and forwarding the
thousands of letters of
sympathy they received
to government officials.
In 1967, Truscott
separated from his wife,
retired from the armed
forces and moved to an
isolated cottage near
Carleton Place, about 50
kilometres ' west of
Ottawa.
He rarely saw anyone
except two sons who live
in ' Carleton Place and a
daughter•in Ottawa.
Friends said he came
out of his shell toward the
end of his life to dri-,;e a
school bus and manage a
teenage , boys' hockey
-team.
His son• was released
from prison in 1969 after
10 years. ' Stevn 'has
changed hid na a and
evades publicity.
f
Corsages were pinned
on the bride-to-be,
Margaret, by her mother,
Mrs. Emma Franken and
the maid of honor -to -be
Rose Marie Foran by
Mrs. Joanne Phalen. She
also read an address of
best wishes and
congratulations on her
approaching marriage
and gifts were carried in
by Maryanne Franken
and Patricia Stapleton.
Unwrapping the gifts,
Margaret was assisted by
