murdering Jane Graham, wife of the
former, on the 2nd of October last.
It will be remembered thatabout noon
on that day Mrs. Carroll was found hang,
reg to a beam in the driving shed dead.
An inquest was held by Dr. Billington,
coroner, at which very little light was
thrown on the matter, altlioueh the
inquiry lasted three days The jury at
that time returned the following verdict:.
'That said Jane Carroll came to her
death ontst of October, 1887, in the
building upon her premises, by hanging
by her own act, during a fit of mental
derangement. The relations of the
deceased woman were not satisfied with
the result, They believed that she had
met with foul play. Their theory was
that the woman was decoyed to the
stable, knockeci insensible with a blow
on the head, and then hanged to the
beam. They have been investigating
the matter since and declare that it was

THE ENGLISH APPLE MARKET.
A Liverpool report on the market for
Canadian and American apples for week
endiog Dee. 8, 1887, says: With arrivals
doable the weight of last week, our market
must he reported somewhat weaker, although
good fruit in good condition will eti11 bring
the high prices mentioned in our last. The
Germania's cargo was partly sold last week,
and the portion held over did not benefit by
the delay. The Toronto, with 731 barrels,
was also partly sold last week. New York
prices show the most palpable signs of
weakness, and all -round the decline may be.
estimated at Is 6d to 2s. Boston fruit was
not so good this week, and here again the
decline inay be noticed. Canadian apples
keep up in trice best of any, and only a
alight decline may be noted here, caused
more by the condition of the fault than by a
slackening off in the domand, which contin-
ues excellent.
