Herman clan
gathers
To celebrate the
coming to Clinton in 1879
of Edward Herman, over
100 of his descendants
gathered here on the
weekend of June 23 and
24.
Gordon Herman
welcomed all to town
from his store on the
main street and his home
on Princess Street. A
bountiful supper was
served to the family at St.
Paul's Parish Hall on
Saturday evening, when
the eldest of each of the
branches was called uppn
to introduce his family
members.
Edward Herman and
his wife Ellen had 13
children, eight born in
England and five in
Canada. Nine of these
had families of their own
and eight of the nine were
represented at the
reunion. The only sur-
viving member of
Edward and Ellen's large
family is 89 -year-old Mrs.
Gladys Draper of
Huronview.
On Sunday morning
many of the visitors
attended the service at
St. Paul's where the
Hermans have attended
since 1879. Several have
sung in the choir there,
beginning with Edward
himself. For 34 years,
Nell (Herman) Fremlin
was organist.
Following the church
service, a picnic was held
at the Conservation Area
Park south of Clinton.
The Bayfield river has
been the scene of many a
happy Herman Sunday
picnic over the years, but
none so large as this.
In spite of a few
mishaps with the wind,
all present were served
lunch and spent a very
pleasant time visiting
and reminiscing.
Gladys Draper came to
spend some time with her
family. Other guests
were present from
Quebec, Toronto, Van-
couver, Southern
California, Arizona,
London, Waterloo,
Centralia, Harriston,
Hanover, Durham and
other places.
This has been a
memorable weekend for
the Herman family, and a
dream come, true for
many of them.
