Clinton News-Record, 1979-06-28, Page 6PAGE 6 --CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 1979 Clinton golfers go to Mitchell tourney This week a contingent of ladies is heading to Mitchell to play in the Mitchell Ladies' Golf Tournament. It may not be the Canadian Open but the competition is sure to. be close and the good times will make up for some of the scores. The ladies from the Seaforth Club going to the tour- nament are Bunn Longstaff, Jean Stewart, Gail Price, Chris Walsh and Carolanne Doig. Clinton will be represented by Laura Anstett, Kay Sharp, Mert Elliott and Jean Bartliff. The tournament will be over by press time but by next week a rundown on the performances will be reported. There are many ladies' tournaments in the area which give the female golfers lots of opportunity to try their hand on other courses in a competitive situation. The date for the Seaforth Ladies' Tour- nament has been set for July 25. Ladies' golf is in- creasing in popularity and everyone is aware of those lovely ladies who play the game fora living on the Ladies' Professional Golf Tour. Many will never attain that level of performance but as long as they enjoy the game, that's what keeps them going. It is interesting to know something of the first women to grace the game of golf. One of these great ladies was Babe Zaharias, an American athlete who won two gold medals in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles before ever taking up golf This week in ball Tykes — Wingham at Clinton, Saturday, 12:30. While a variety of wildlife makes use of brush - piles, cottontail rabbits are .probably the prin- cipal species that benefits from their con- struction. The past few years have been hard on cottontails, so a helping hand would be more than welcome by them. Location and method of construction are the two features which will either make your brsh- pile a haven for wildlife or a sterile pile of wood. Built. in -the middle of a large sterile -forest; the pile will be of some limited use, but in order to reach its full potential, it should be located in that prime, heavily populated "edge" area. This is the strip of bush that contains a heavy growth of underbrush glitti'i;pi rides most of the requirements necessary for an animal to sur- vive. It also harbours about 90 per cent of all wildlife species. Construction is equally important. Brushpiles should be large with a good strong base to prevent collapse. They should also be built on a small hill, rise or hummock so they are out of water when it rains or during spring runoff. I usually look for a fallen tree to use as a base if possible, but only if it falls across high ground. If such a tree is not available, I build a "crib -style" foundation out of logs for the base. Then I build a "big" brushpile. By big, I mean something in the neighbourhood of 15 feet across, by six to eight feet tall in the center. This almost guarantees that it will be used. I prefer to construct one brushpile that will be utilized rather than three or four smaller ones that may or may not attract residents. Building a brushpile is a good family activity. If the whole family pitches in and takes a Sunday afternoon to create a "rabbit house" beside your favorite cross country ski trail this summer, chances are you will be amply rewarded this winter with a maze of tracks in the snow as well as an occasional sighting. +++ The Tackle for Tykes program initiated by the Federation of Anglers and Hunters is off to a great start. Over 20 clubs across Ontario are participating by collecting donations of tackle and organizing fishing outings for un- derprivileged kids. We 'still need your help however. All donations of fishing tackle (and -or a couple of dollars if you prefer) will be gratefully accepted. Check with your local conservation club to see if they're accepting donations, or mail them direct to "Tackle for Tykes", c -o Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, P.O. Box 28, Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 6Y5. Don't let it end there however. If you're a fisherman, take a kid fishing with you once this summer. You'll probably enjoy the experience as much as the kid id you can rest assured that you've helped someone else enjoy the great outdoors. Motocross finale held The Di-Jer '79 Motocross Series was climaxed Sunday at its Grand Finale held at Hully Gully, near Varna. The series consisted of four race events in May " and June, with over 400 different athletes taking part in the racing tour- nament. Chuck Collins of Varna was second in the junior 250, while Calvin James of Brussels was fourth in the junior open. which later became her only sport. Babe's suc- cess was due to her strength and long hours of practise. In 1946 she won the U.S. Amateur, the following year going to Britain and becoming the first American to hold the winner's title there. She became professional and won the U.S. Open three times. She had a strong sense of publicity and attracted great crowds. She had a strong in- fluence on giving impetus to the women's professional circuit, which was just coming into being. Today the women golfers on- tour share the spotlight just as much as the men and names like Nancy Lopez, Carol Mann, Mickey Wright and Sandra Post are familiar to all those in- terestedin the game. It's nice to know that Canada has a good representative on the Ladies' Tour in Sandra Post. Sandra has won several tournaments, including the Colgate - Dinah Shore twice in.. a. row. She is consistently a high money winner on the tour." Another Canadian lady who had been a household name is Mrs. Marlene Stewart Streit who is noted as Canada's pre-eminent woman golfer of all time and one of the great women golfers of the world. She is of small stature and possesses a lovely compact swing. This gives her great accuracy and when added to her determination and courage, combines to give her greatness.
