Fleming Flyers
Eliminated from cup
By Ace
On Tuesday June 5 the
Clinton Soccer Club was
eliminated from further
play in the City Cup,
w hen they were defeated
by the London German-
('anadiens 3-0.
Shortly after the start
of the game, the Germans
grabbed a 1-0 lead when
thje Clinton goalie stopped
a head ball only to have
the rebound go to an
unguarded forward who
a ural►y
speaking
placed the ball in the open
side.
The teams battled
through the remainder of
the falf without any
further goal. However,
midway through the
second half a pass from
the left wing was
gathered in by the
Germans' centre forward
who beat the Clinton
netminder with a low
shot.

The Shakespeare Company (Canada) Ltd. has
come up with a new reel that just may
revolutionize fishing. It is a uniquely designed
closed face spinning reel. Yup, I said closed face.
At first glance, it appears to be a spincast
outfit, but the second look reveals the absence of
the thumb lever. It is designed to be used under
the rod, in the same manner as a conventional
spinning reel, but with a slight difference. The
new reels from Shakespeare are engineered to
sit ht hind the hand in the same manner as a fly
reel.
This feature in itself may warrant the pur-
chase of these little beauties. I know from ex-
perience how the hand can suffer from fatigue
and cramp up (usually at that all important
moment) after a long session of casting. Spin-
ning rods all come with nice cork handles, but to
use a conventional reel effectively you wind up
gripping the reel seat instead of the handle. The
Shakespeare reels can he used with either a
spinning rod or a fly rod to give the user the
delicate balance and feel of the fly rod with the'
versatility of the spinning rod.
The reel is also very simple to operate. The
fishing line is picked up with the index finger,
rnd released internally in the reel by turning the
handle clockwise. The cast can be controlled by
feathering the line with your forefinger, and the
retrieve is made by turning the handle in a
counterclockwise direction.
The two reels currently on the market are -the
model 1810 Deluxe and the model 1756 (a smaller
lighter version of the_ deluxe- If• -you're in
the market for a new reel, or even if you're
jus
curious, ask your local sporting's good dealer it,
he has them in stock. You may just find;ourse]f,..
on your favourite piece of water this summer
with a new and different reel on that favourite
rod.

1'his is an appeal. Please learn to identify your
fish BEFORE you go fishing. This may sound
ridiculous to the experienced fisherman, but it's
utterly arP.IY-irg hflw many people liter i_1 .d not

know one fish from the other. In some instances,
wrong identification can be merely em-
barrassing. I've run across people who have
mistaken suckers for trout. That in itself is not
too had, but if, for instance, someone catches a
bass out of.. season and keeps it, thinking it is a
walleye. they can he in for real trouble. It doesn't
take much effort' to learn how to identify fish,
and as a responsible fisherman, you should
consider it your duty to do so.

when a forward drilled a
hard shot just under the
crossbar from eighteen
yards out.
The play between the
two teams was much
closer than the score
indicated. John Elliott
had the German keeper
beat with a hard shot,
only to have his shot hit
the crossbar and bounce
back out. Bill also just
lifted a shot over the top
of the net with the goalie
out of position. The
German-Canadiens' size
and experience was just
too much for the Flyers to
handle.
On Sunday, June 10, the
Fleming Flyers returned
to regular season action
and defeated Calabria by
a score of 3-1 inj..ondon.
The teams battled to a
scoreless draw through
the first half. However,
the Clinton team looked
impressive, and the
players were happy with
the score as the Flyers
were going against a
strong wind. The Clinton
defence, led by Brian
Millar, Dean Ryan and
Pete W.i-se, was out-
standing for the Flyers.
Calabria took a 1-0 lead
early in the second half
on a penalty shot. Pete
Wise was forced to knock
out a sure goal with his
hand which resulted in
the penalty shot. Clinton
keeper Jeuregen
Hellman had no chance
as the hard high shot as
he was cleanly beaten.
However, Clinton
fought back and tied the
score when Brian Ken-
nedy*drilled a hard shot
to the left-hand side of the
net.
The Flyers forged into
a 2-1 lead when Kennedy
scored his second goal as
he was set up perfectly. by
Bill Cantelon and John
Elliott.
The .Clinton squad got_
an insurance goal when
Brian Millar took a free
kick and sent three
Clinton players in alone
on the Calabria goalie.

Jeuregen Hellman, who
returned to the Clinton
lineup after a month's
absence, demonstrated
poise and confidence in
the Clinton net. Also the
fact the Clinton team was
able to come back shows
'that the young team is
gaining experience and
confidence with each
outing.
Next game for the
Flyers is on Sunday June
17 when they play
Curinga at London's Cove
