Paint the dowel; attach it, with the hardware, to the wall above the drapes. The plants won't interfere with the opening and closing of the cur- tains. A cracked birdbath, filled with soil in which low -growing plants and trailing ivy are planted, will make a terrific planter for indoors or out. To hold up short - stemmed flowers, pour several inches of bird gravel into a glass vase. The Scouters reported that their boys did well to sleep an hour. Scoutmaster Dave had all of his boys out on a nature hike at 4:30 a.m. as they were disturbing the other troops. They had a busy morning of competitions with such things as compass course, knot relay, water relay, rope climb, obstacle course, measurement calculation and chariot building. They didn't do too well in the water relay, as one boy fell and broke the styrofoam cup. They only had about an inch of the cup left to carry the water in. In the afternoon, they also went on a scavanger hunt. This was a two hour hike along the Maitland Trail looking for 25 items. The scouts cooked all their meals on the open fire. And by all reports the meals were well cooked and enjoyed by all. When the'boys cooked their stew on Sunday, other leaders spoke for well accepted and was also advised to be sent to the Leader, a Scouting magazine. The troop placed third, a big improvement over last year. The Scouters were really proud of the way their boys acted and their performance in the. competitions. Congratulations boys! Hoping to see you at these presentations In October Fitness van returns The Fit Test first visited Vanastra on October 25-26, 1978 and 40 adults from the com- munity were tested. At the completion of the first fiscal year of operations, the fitness testing van had visited 40 com- munities and over 2,000 adults were tested in Southwestern Ontario. Has the program assisted adults to become more active? There are indications from a follow- up, survey on 200 people that the testing program had significant effect on the activity patterns. Specifically, 49 percent of the men and 46 percent of 'h^ •..•Or»rn who took the test indicated that their level of activity has increased and they were following the exercise prescription given to them during the con- sultation phase of the test. On June 18-19, the fitness testing van will be returning to Vanastra and adults who wish to have their physical fit- ness assessed should pre - register by calling the Vanastra Centre, 482- 3549. A fee of $15 is charged to off -set the operating costs of the program. In this current year of operations, Fitness Ontario will be examining the test results of people who are being re -tested to determine if their levels of fitness have improved. Already there are in- dications that the people who followed their exercise prescriptions have improved on various measures of physical fitness. The change to a more active lifestyle for some adults appears to have resulted from the Ontario "Fit Test' program and it is hoped that in the future, more adults will "Get More Out of Living When They Put More into Life". How will Vanastra and Clinton shape -up? Cubs join others to camp The First Vanastra Cub ended its year with a camping excursion to Benmiller Falls Con- servation Area. Here the boys joined five other cub packs for a weekend of competition and fun. Friday night started out with setting up tents and arrangement of the buddy system. The boys enjoyed hot dogs cooked over the campfire and then it was time for bed. Not that anybody slept for long. One tent had us up at 4 a.m. looking for a sleeping bag that had somehow become lost in a 6' by 6' tent. Rise and shine was set for seven but this was too late for our boys so it managed to be set for 5:45 a.m. Flag break was at 7:30. p.m.. by .which time we had already had breakfast. So we had lots of time before events started at 9 a.m. to clean our,ten.ts. and ca. -m:1)41 - . ,_ 'The entire pack also had time for a nature hike, which they returned from with a little bit of nature a garter snake. This was quickly able to do the knots they were assigned. A Scavenger hunt followed which was a two hour hike on the Maitland trail. We had 25 things to find, some of which we missed due to the fact that the leaders did not know what a sycamore tree or beech tree looked like. From this hike, we returned with two more bits of nature a salamander and a toad. These were also returned to the bush before they were deposited into the leaders tent. After . a supper of hot dogs .we took part in a peanut scramble,' with our 10 boys turning in 362 peanuts. Campfire followed where we learned a few new songs and also presented our own song "Cub Days". We were quite proud to say this was written by a woman from__ V a nas.tra. , - Mr s Esthern Handy..' The song was well accepted and all groups asked for copies of the words and requested that we send this song to the leader magazine so returned to the bush. all packs in Canada night Oey it• tug uo firstr events were war andB an ob- fi d again, bu-this time stacle course. We then challenged two other packs to a game of soccer and a game of baseball. After a delicious lunch prepared and served by our two cooks we returned to more events, the most important being a knot relay. Our boys proved that they learned something this year with them all being Sunday Specia ROAST BEEF with gravy or BREADED PORK CHOPS Both with French fries or mashed potatoes, buttered mixed vegetables, and include soup or juice, salad and roll, tea or coffee. "Scouts own" was at 9 a.m. and then we did our crafts and took part in other pack crafts. We made pine cone bird pipes, mice and necklaces with their names on them. After lunch, we broke camp and waited - for closing. We found that we were second runners-up and eligible for a trophy. It was something to be proud of. Congratulations boys on your hard work! The leaders would like to say a very special thank -you to Jeff Dixon• and Robin Gates for going with us to cook. The meals were delicious and without you it would have been impossible for us to attend camp.
