At the Seaforth tee
A Golf Course is not a
Golf Club. It is an old
expression and a very
accurate one.
For many years now
the golf course in
Seaforth has been in
operation, but it wasn't
until Monday night June
4, that a Seaforth Golf
and Country Club was
formed. Although the
meeting turnout was not
as large as expected, an
executive was chosen to
get our first year off to a
good start. Now we have
a "club" that can
organize many events
and increase our
members' enjoyment in
the sport of golf.
Many interesting ideas
have been brought up and
I'm sure if all the
members help out by
contributing their time
and ideas, the new
executive will have no
problem making the 1979
season a success.
The club president for
this year is Lloyd Eisler
of Seaforth, owner of
Seaforth Reddie Chef.
Mr. Eisler commented
that he would be happy to
help us get,our club
started and our first year
off the ground. Don
Morton, a Seaforth high
school teacher is vice-
president for 1979 and he
will become president in
1980. The club treasurer
is Bill Walsh of Seaforth.
A keen golfer and
defending champion of
our Annual Men's
Invitation, Bill is an
accountant at Bendix.
Carolanne Doig., is the
1979 secretary and I for
one am sure that she is
going to have a very busy
summer.
In addition to the above
mentioned positions, four
directors were elected to
assist in organizing club
events and represent the
different areas of golfing
interest. Don- Armstrong
a --Clinton police - officer
and Bill Weber of
Egmondville, a Clinton
high school teacher will
be 1979 directors.
Representing the ladies is
Mrs. Bernice Longstaff of
Seaforth, and the juniors
are represented by
Claude Daw, a Clinton
high school student.
Of course all the club
members are encouraged
to give their support.
Everyone is busy during
the summer but if we all
pull together we will be
off to a flying start! So
after over 15 years let's
congratulate ourselves,
we're a club now!
This Thursday night Is
Men's Night and we hope
to have enough fellows
out to have a fun com-
petition organized. On
Sunday afternoon at 3
p.m. a small mixed
tournament is scheduled,
as the Clinton Legion
Associates visit us again.
It would be wise to come
out early and avoid the
rush later on.
On June 4, three of our
area golfers travelled to
New Dundee for the
qualifying round for the
1979 Ontario Amateur
Championship. Ken Doig
Sr. was the low qualifier
of the day with a 73 and he
will qualify to play in the
Amateur being played at
the Summit Club
beginning July 17. Cam
Doig and Ian Doig both
shot 80 and failed to
qualify.
June 9-17 is Ontario
Junior Golf Week,
organized to promote
junior golf development
in our province. •
Remember that today's
youth are tomorrow's
golfers. At Seaforth there,
are over 50 Junior
members and most of
them are super keen
golfers. Many of them are
out every day and eat,
sleep, and dream golf.
Oneyoungster said that
last week -he dreamed -he..
had driven the mower in
the Grande Prix! The
same boy wrote the
following poem:
FORE
The day was sunny as
could be, I set my ball
upon my tee.
I swung the club with all
my might, the darn thing
hooked to the right,
I hit my three but hit the
tree,
I hit four and yelled
"fore"
I hit my wedge and went
into the hedge, I hit my
two and bounced into a
shoe.
I made a putt with my
putter, the darn thing
slipped by like butter.
I swung my club with all
my might, the darn thing
didn't come down until
night.—by Charlie
Malcolm.
Some of our juniors are
excellent golfers and
some are just beginners,
but in both cases the
enthusiasm is high. This
year is the first time for a
junior match play event
and the response has
been excellent.
We hope to get some
equally, healthy response
during our Junior Golf
Week. Any money raised
during the week is
divided in half, with one
half being retained by the
club and the other half
sent to the Provincial
Junior Development
Programs. This year men
and ladies in par-
ticipating clubs will be
able to play during Junior
Golf Week for the low net,
the winners participating
in an Ontario Junior Golf
Week Championship at
well known golf courses.
The entry fee is $1.00 per
round or $5.00 for a Big
Brother 'Ticket and you
can play as many rounds
as possible during the
week. -Come out -and give,
our Junior Golfers your
support.
