HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1979-04-26, Page 39 Chinese cabbage can taste as good as it can look • • Next to lettuce, Chinese cab- bage is the best green salad ingredient. Its leaves can be used whole to line salad bowls or heads can be cross cut into ringlets for tossed salads. If you or your family are fond of salads, you really should grow Chinese cabbage as a change of pace. Chinese cabbage, if you are not familiar with it, tastes not at all like regular cabbage. Its pleasant piquant taste and texture are actually better suited to salads than to cooking, even though lightly steamed and buttered Chinese cabbage is a delicacy. Some gardeners have been disappointed with growing their New diagnostic service for all plant growers Homeowners as well as the agricultural industry can now get answers to their questions and problems from a new pest diagnostic and services clinic at the University of Guelph. The clinic is offered with the support of funds provided through the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The clinic will deal with questions relating to the iden- tification and control of pests, the identification of plants, and the many problems encountered by horticulturists and homeowners in growing plants. For many years, such problems have been brought to the University of Guelph, and referred to faculty members in several departments for an- swers. Among those who responded to such queries were the late Prof. J. C. Taylor, and Professors H. Goble and C. B. Kelly, who recently retired from their faculty positions. Modern demands for updated information on pesticides, and a steadily growing number of all inquiries now require a more co- ordinated system, with specimens for identification and other enquiries directed to a central location. The new clinic achieves this, and will provide a more prompt and better service to the public. The clinic will be staffed, initially, with a diagnostician, R. T. Wukasch, assisted by both Prof. Goble and Prof. Kelly on a part time basis. Other specialists at the University of Guelph and elsewhere will also act as con- sultants so that the clinic can serve a broad function to the agricultural industry, ancillary industries and the general public. Enquiries and specimens for diagnosis should be sent or delivered to: Pest Diagnostic and Advisory Clinic, Department of Environmental Biology, Room B 14, Graham Hall, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, NIG 2W1. The secret is in the date of planting. Chinese cabbage needs several weeks of cool weather to form those big, tightly wrapped heads. The best planting time for Chinese cabbage throughout the Midwest and South is after July 1; plants will mature when days are becoming progressively shorter and cooler. Plants will head rather than shooting up flowers. Spring planted crops of Chinese Page 9 cabbage are "chancey" anywhere, even if you get seeds in the ground extremely early. One way to assure a good spring crop of Chinese cabbage is to plant seeds under a tunnel made of clear plastic sheeting or an arch of corrugated clear fiberglass.
