from St. Marys and had his purse in his
hip pocket. He picked two men up ou
the road and alter they got out he
missed bis purse. On returning to the
spot where they got out, he found the
'empty pocket book. It is to be hoped
that those men will be found out.

Mr. SVm.Leask has dug one hundred
bushels of potatoes from less than an
acre of ground. Ile used no Paris
green, the -bugs being kept in check
by picking them off the vines as soon as
they appeared. Other years he used
Paris green, and the result was that he
had to buy potatoes before the spring
came. )

neers ofthe'township, in the person of
Mary Hornet', relict of the late Henry
Homey, died at the residence ot her
son, Henry, on Sunday last, at the age
of 86 years. Deceased has invariably
enjoyed good health, and the cause of
death was old age. The funeral, which
took place Tuesday; was a large one.
FIRE. -The peaceful slumbers of our
citizens were aroused, and the quietude
of our village thrown into intense ex-
citement on Friday evening upon the
discovery that fire was working its rav-
ages in our midst. The general store of t
Messrs. Hotham & Kinsman, opposite w
the hotel, was the victim of the fiery i
element. It appears that about eleven t
o'clock, Mr. Botham, who sleeps in the
store, was about retiring when the lamp
he was using exploded. The flames, he
says, spread so rapidly that it was im- b
possible to save but little, his clothing, 0
save that he wore, being also consum-
ed. The insurance on the stock, 81200;
on the building, which belonged to Mr.
Robt. Gardiner, $500. It is possible
that the store will be re --built.
